I like comic books where larger than life heroes punch each other then team up and take down the bad guy(s). I don't need lots of tension and deep pathos in a super hero story. If I want that, I'll read Alan Moore, Warren Ellis, etc. But standard super hero fare is not that. Characters like this are too ridiculous for it to be taken too seriously. I like the "Pow Pow" comic book stuff. It has its place. And no film has packed as much of that on screen as this one.

I've seen it 3 times. It's not so much a solid story/film as much as it's a comic book come to life with a lot of extremely cool moments, almost all character-driven. The flick is rife with them. There's something to "geek out" over about every 5-10 minutes. And yet it all works as a full, fun yarn.

The only thing that really irks me about this movie is that Stan Lee gets another "look at me!!" moment, yet Jack Kirby's name is barely buried in the end credits. F that.

I suck at conveying my thoughts, that's why I go straight to the lolcats.

What he just said woff. :lol

I agree with what you are saying Irish, but. . .I would humbly suggest that Alan Moore also does the standard super hero fare as good as anyone. Look no further than "Whatever Happened To the Man of Tomorrow," or Supreme, or Tom Strong.

Yeah, but did those have a 200 million 3 day opening. :lol

Well, yeah, sure. But even that stuff has themes beneath the surface that are deeper than your standard issue of A-List Super Heroes. But he's definitely written some fun super hero yarns himself. What I'm saying is that he and others have already sufficiently deconstructed the genre and added depth but there's still room for the "dumb" fun stuff, too.

Alan Moore can juggle both story and entertainment. I think his writing got more full of itself later on, but his earlier DC stuff, especially V and Killing Joke were awesome. I was a teenager, not overly worried about plotlines and still loved the stories. Hell, I'd reread V over and over.

It's going to be tough for anybody to make a purely fun and unapologetically entertaining comic book movie better than The Avengers anytime soon. Instead of carefully delivering a few well earned geek moments at strategic times, it just drives a dump truck up to your house and pours geek moments into your lap so that you have a permanent dumb grin plastered on your face. It's like a ride at Disneyland that's so much fun that you get off and then get right back in line to experience it again.

Well after boycotting this thread the last month for fear of spoilers I finally got to see Avengers tonight.

What a thrill! I don't know that its necessarily the greatest superhero "movie" but hell if it didn't come across as the greatest love letter to Marvel Superheroes (and its fans) that I could have hoped for.

It really delivered. Still don't love Cap's new suit (which is a bummer because I was hoping it'd grow on me once I saw it in full context of the flick) but I was giddy at the shot of him half frozen on the table a la Avengers #4. :yess:

Everybody was fantastic, my wife and I laughed at the great banter throughout and lo and behold an end finale that actually delivered! Now off to all the Avengers Hot Toys threads! :lol

:duff The new suit didn't bother me, but I'm definitely a fan of his old style military inspired suit.

The Avengers - 10/10

Just came back from my 3rd viewing, and my 1st in IMAX 3D... This movie is great!

Pretty much a perfect comic book movie, and is definitely the best comic book movie ever produced (IMO). There is a perfect balance of action, character development, humour, and awesome "comic book geek out" moments!

Christ Evans is brilliant as Captain America, I loved some of his dialogue and scenes, and they did a great job in showing a conflicted man out of time eventually rising to take leadership of the team. I'm glad they gave him the most screen time.

Also, as already discussed, Ruffalo is excellent as Bruce Banner/The Hulk... Ah who am I kidding?! EVERY SINGLE character is portrayed perfectly and is given their equal share of time to shine, there isn't a single thing I would change about ANY of them.

Bring on Captain America 2, Thor 2, Iron Man 3, and, of course, The Avengers 2

Good day!

Speaking of Evans, I was rewatching the FF movies (yes, I know, I shouldn't, lol) and was wondering, besides him and Stevenson, has anyone else represented two Marvel characters on screen? Has anyone represented three Marvel characters? Obscure trivia because with some Marvel stuff going back quite a ways I thought there might be some that I never caught. I mean actual appearing actors, not voice actors who do the cartoon versions.

I was just thinking...what I don't like about it is the eyes of his mask. They're too sad, because of the shape. That's why he looks like a geek wearing it. The rest of the uniform is great. Comes as close to the comic look is it can get without being that silly. I mean, it looks great in the comics, but his boots and gloves would really look goofy in real life.

:exactly:
I enjoy this movie myself...I would have to say that RDJ and Ruffalo stole the show..IMO Thor didn't get much movie time, but I did enjoy his contribution to the story. Evans, did a fantastic job playing a good manner super hero.

If I had a nitpik way to much Black Widow...I didn't like her final battle scenes, shoot those aliens with her little hand guns..a little out of place.

Agreed with the finale scene it was amazing...just a battle royal, New York got demolished. :clap

I love this movie.

But I need to see it in pretty 2D again. 3D was kinda distracting. But OK.

Agreed...I need to see this in 2D. In 3D it felt like I was missing something...

Agreed...Can't wait for the next sequels, the new bad guys (THANOS) and more Hulk...

My wife and 5-year old daughter went to go see the Avengers last night. They both loved it, which is a testament to what a well-made movie it is. My wife really doesn't like superhero movies, but she was raving about this one.

This movie did a great job of allowing each superhero to shine individually without letting the audience get "bored" when the focus was on one of the other heroes.

My wife was laughing about Thor's "he was adopted" and RDJ's "Point Break" reference long after the movie was over. :lol

I would have really like to have seen Hulk grab Thor's hand after he picked Mjolnir back up and beat him with his own hammer like he did in the comics.

"Gurgle", "shrapt", "ack", "bonk"? Wow! Comics sound effects have devolved back to 60's Batman.

The last time I read "Ack" in a comic...it was Bill the Cat. And why doyou all suppose it is than when I read "Shrapt"...I pronunced it "Shropt"?

And a note on another subject- This movie was not intended to be something that wins an academy award for Hallmark moments. It is a fun ride along with some fantastical superheroes who are saving the earth despite their hilarious dysfunction. No need for a soul-cleansing experience with that. If anyone want soul-cleansing..."Steel Magnolias" is in the 5.00 bin at Wal-Mart...I left them all there for you.:)
