It's going to be tough for anybody to make a purely fun and unapologetically entertaining comic book movie better than The Avengers anytime soon. Instead of carefully delivering a few well earned geek moments at strategic times, it just drives a dump truck up to your house and pours geek moments into your lap so that you have a permanent dumb grin plastered on your face. It's like a ride at Disneyland that's so much fun that you get off and then get right back in line to experience it again.

Well after boycotting this thread the last month for fear of spoilers I finally got to see Avengers tonight.

What a thrill! I don't know that its necessarily the greatest superhero "movie" but hell if it didn't come across as the greatest love letter to Marvel Superheroes (and its fans) that I could have hoped for.

It really delivered. Still don't love Cap's new suit (which is a bummer because I was hoping it'd grow on me once I saw it in full context of the flick) but I was giddy at the shot of him half frozen on the table a la Avengers #4. :yess:

Everybody was fantastic, my wife and I laughed at the great banter throughout and lo and behold an end finale that actually delivered! Now off to all the Avengers Hot Toys threads! :lol

and :lol at HT comment

And a note on another subject- This movie was not intended to be something that wins an academy award for Hallmark moments. It is a fun ride along with some fantastical superheroes who are saving the earth despite their hilarious dysfunction. No need for a soul-cleansing experience with that. If anyone want soul-cleansing..."Steel Magnolias" is in the 5.00 bin at Wal-Mart...I left them all there for you.:)

I also believe that there are alot of academy award winning "deep drama" movies that I will never watch.

But don't be so quick to dismiss the need for well written human drama in a superhero movie.

Which means a mixture of exploration, trajedy, tension, discovery, humor, excitement and triumph.

Avengers might seem simple at the superficial level, but it took really great thought to have the humor come off so natural and not feel forced.

I wish there had been a bit more tension. but that ended at the Stark/Loki scene in Stark's building.

Coulson dying really affected me, that was unexpected. :lol

While not Schindler's list as far as that kind of deep story telling this movie had the right amount it appears for most of us. It balanced everything so well that I'm really ready to see it a third time and then it come out quickly on blu so I can see it again.

The next morning and I'm stilly giddy about this movie. The comparison to a Disney ride you take and then immediately want to line up for again is absolutely spot on.

This movie would have *failed* if it aspired to Dark Knight-style filmmaking. I wanted 2+ hours of endearing banter and larger than life spectacle with proper respect given to each iconic character. That's *exactly* what they gave us. Right on!

I feel the movie would have been damaged by any more Hallmark crap. That is not what I go to see "The Avengers" for and I have zero need for it in the film. Of course, my current feelings on the matter could be stemming from the fact that my BBQ ribs were destroyed in a grill-inferno, yesterday. Who knows?:)

I've seen it 5 x already :horror

Avengers can actually even show a thing or two, or ten, to Chris Nolan on how to direct action scenes. :lecture

Yeah, pretty much this.

I wish they would've shown the Hulk nude, just a quick ass shot is all i'm asking for.

Bet you it would've been funny.

First a gasp, then laughter.

The laughter would've been from me. :lol

Nice! I can understand wanting to see this that many times it's that good.

It truly is the equivalent of a great Disney ride.

I'm definately keep returning to the well for more.

Someone here said it perfect.

It will be a long time before another Superhero movie delivers this kind of combined humor and action packed quality.

Yeah, it's a he'll of a ride. Even better than I expected which is great as I had high expectations for it.

According to box office mojo TA has finally cracked a billion dollars.

Yup. That's why I thought it was important to identify the quality writing and directing foremost.

Why don't you just act like my wife and be in denial. Since they didn't have a funeral for him, she thinks he recouped off screen and will be back in the next franchise movie. After two viewings she still refuses to admit hes dead. :cuckoo:

Ok. Watched it Friday, it was entertaining but in the vein of a big video game. Like visual cocaine while you are watching it but instantly forgettable the second you leave the theatre.

Whendon needs to work on some new tricks. Completely the same formula. Hey it works some can see why he does it over and over. The movies are enjoyable by the masses and make a ton of money,

I'm not so easily swayed, this might have well been Star Trek.

Large cast of characters comes together for a visually stimulating thrill ride. The one liners keep a coming' which lets the audience know its ok to enjoy this cheesy sci fi / comic book flick. Many of the humor is lame but oh we'll it's a big silly geek movie so that's ok.

You have things blowing up, a few cute girls, things exploding oh and lest we forget an evil maniacal bad guy who just wants to take over the world, or blow it up or some other cliche uninspiring motive.

There is internal strife wirhin the group only to come together and prevail and set up the inevitable sequel. Oh and things explode.

The masses leave, moms and sons, young couples, groups of buddies, taking about how funny it was when hulk punched Thor. Then they get in their cars and drive to Applebee's go home and fall asleep to American idol.

Sometimes that's ok yes. Afterall this is the avengers a hodge podge movie that's only real set up was to be a huge box office success. With that in mind? It succeeded.

But a great film? Nope. Is that ok though? Maybe.

I hope you took a thorough shower afterwards to wash off the stink of the peasants. :horror

I don't think this scene will ever get old.

I'm sorry, I realize this is a message board and not an English class, but your post doesn't make alot of sense. You start by saying how this is so similar to Whedon's other works, but then use a JJ Abrams flick to compare it against? :slap

OR is your point is that he "borrowed" someone elses winning formula, rather than using his own, then he basically did come up with a new "trick" for him. Either way:
