I know Johnny Depp has made $250 million from the Pirates movies but I really do fear for Downey's continued involvement past IM2. Yes Disney has final say but if Feige can convince them that he's expendable who knows what they'll ultimately decide.

The dynamic between the individual actors was PURE GOLD. It simply will not be the same without him. Curse that stupid Hulk movie for wasting one of RDJ's Marvel appearances. :cuss

i agree with everyone here that say RDJ is Tony Stark but at the same time Marvel Studios has done a great job of casting. nobody thought Norton's Banner could be better but Ruffalo did a great job. Howard's Rhodey was also great but Cheadle pull through without a problem.

Yeah, that's kind of my feeling, as well. I really dig RDJ's Iron Man, and knew he was gonna do a great, interesting job from the first time it was announced because he's such a great actor. But there are always other ways to skin a cat.

That's a very strange expression, btw :lol

Everything you said is valid. However, you have to realize that Howard was a side character and acted in only one movie just like Norton. It was easier to replace those two since they didn't have as much screentime. RDJ on the other hand has come in 3 movies plus 3 cameos. He'll be much more difficult to replace and it would be very foolish and arrogant of Marvel to think otherwise. He is Iron Man. Period!

RDJr is a fantastic actor who is not going to spend the rest of his life playing one character. At some point he will move on. Honestly, it's better to leave when people are still begging you for more than to outstay your welcome. So I would guess he's giving some thought to his future after IM3 and Avengers 2.

Joss Whedon is also not a lock for Avengers 2. There's a story this morning that he has his own ideas for what the second movie should be but they don't necessarily line up with Marvel's. Whedon is a billion dollar director now. He can get a job anywhere he wants. He's not going to kiss Marvel's @ss.

But isn't Whedon already contractually obligated to do Avengers 2? Not sure what role artistic decisions would play in the context of that contract, though.

I agree with the sentiment that folks should leave on top, before they wear out their welcome. And once we see RDJ in Iron Man 3, Avengers 2, and more assorted cameos, maybe that will be enough. His age, the fact that (I'm sure) he doesn't want to end up typecast somehow, and the fact that money is gonna talk at some point makes me think that we're gonna see another Iron Man. It's just a matter of how soon.

No.

But one trademark characteristic Whedon embraces in his work is his ability to unite groups of raggedy misfits against imminent evil. Led by anti-hero Capt. Malcolm Reynolds (Nathan Fillion), “Firefly’s” crew of lost space-wanderers exposed the misdoings of an interplanetary government that stepped out of line. A teenage girl and her “Scooby gang” of freaks and geeks saved Sunnydale and Earth from demons and demented gods in “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.” And now, in “The Avengers,” disparate superheroes worked through their egos and hangups, pulling together as a team to defend the planet against alien invaders.

So which misfit crew is Whedon’s favorite?

“You know, I love all my raggedy children,” he said. “But if I could be anywhere, I’d be on board Serenity.”

i think Feige said something like his contract as an option to direct the sequel. so if he wants its his for the taking.

Salary won't be an issue. RDJ apparently after Iron Man had his agents broker a deal that gave him 5-7% of box office receipt of any film where he portrayed Tony Stark or Iron Man. Given that The Avengers just made over a billion dollars and that it's written into his contract for the rest of it and I'm sure whatever new one he'll have, cash isn't a brokering chip.

Feige is. Apparently he pissed off Norton (small loss now) but at the time he was very hardnosed with him, almost power struggling and some were even calling the way he acted with him petty. His comments about RDJ and casting and moving forward seem to indicate that while he is grateful for him isn't about to kiss his ass.

I don't think Downey will walk due to money but I can see him walking simply because Feige was being an ass and that will ultimately decide it.

As for Whedon, I know there are contractual options but nothing locked in.
