I didn't find it cheesy. The movie had been building to that shot - that's when we first see them as an actual team, and was the last puzzle piece to slide into place (following everyone's solo movies, the after-credit scenes and one-shots slow building to the Avengers).

I do agree that that article seemed quite premature especially since it makes pains to contrast The Avengers with Batman and Spider-Man. It'd be one thing if TASM and TDKR had just both bombed, but they haven't even come out yet! As others have said all three movies could easily be $1 billion blockbusters.

I think the Jamaican bobsled team has a better chance of winning Olympic gold. :huh

I thought that shot was kind of cheesy myself. As was the one with the Avengers all posing in front of Loki. That's one thing I also really disliked about X2.

All 3 of those shots (including X2) are basically love letters to the source material... they're very comic bookish. I think they're great.

I'm sure somewhere right now a WB executive is in bed worried if Somber is out and Vivid and Happy are in. :lol

Considering that a lot of the imax midnight showings are pre-sold out for as far back as January, he's probably laying in a bed worried about if he's had his boner for over 4 hours already.
