And Obi-Wan.

And this is the only film where Padme isn't a complete dolt.

And Battledroids were introduced.

The really terrible thing is if you watch all the DVD extras it becomes painfully obvious why the PT had its bad moments... No it aint Jake Lloyd. Nor is it the dreaded Hayden Christensen.

George Lucas is a terrible director who can't get a motivated honest performance from his actors.

In the OT GL was a nobody (pretty much) and the actors had free reign with how they portrayed their characters.

In the PT everyone treated GL like a Golden Calf whose word was law. Result: Wooden acting.

Fact is in order for George to have his way with the actors he had to throw a tantrum and you can see which scenes in the OT where his tantrum drived scenes.

I was bummed when he decided to direct all 3 prequels... I remember (at least I think I do) that the original plan was he would direct TPM and let other directors (like the OT) direct the follow-ups.

I really think that would have made a big difference; having a director people could challenge and add input to. That of course is my assumption no one suggested to George the acting be as bad as it was in AOTC :lol

Ow guys you crack me up, you are all trying to convince each other that the prequels really were not that bad!!!!

The prequels did not really stand a chance really. The original trilogy shaped our childhoods, fueled our imaginations, had us all dressing up and playing with dollies. It changed our lives.... It is definitely one of the key factors that started me drawing.

Then we all grew and star wars was a memory then along came the prequels. It turned us all back in to children, I will be honest when those open credits rolled up on Phantom Menace on the big screen I held my sons hand and had a tear in my eye!

But was it the same, was this film going to have the same affect on me as A New Hope....... or Empire Strikes Back........ I desperately wanted it to, i desperately wanted to feel that magic that only a small child can experience when faced with more wonder than his own imagination could produce.

For me I think I expected too much from the prequels. I expected my childhood back! and it does not take too many therapy sessions to figure out why I still collect plastic dollies and make dioramas. At the age of 36 I now have the technical ability and skills to turn my childhood imagination into reality and I think that is the reason why this forum is so amazing for me, because I realize I am not alone......I am not the only Freak.
Ow god I rambled on a bit there, I will shut up now and get back to my model making....

No convincing, they're not that bad for me. They're not great(some great moments) but not bad.

That's where you failed i never expected that. I expected more no doubt, but i knew they would not be like the days of old.

TPM
ROTS

AOTC

well there is that and the crappy "by-the-seat-of-his-pants" writing which the PT suffered from. The OT had an overall arc and cohesiveness which the PT just didn't have - and thats not a matter of "rosey expectations let down".

Though I agree, a lot of it is just that it could never have met everyone's expectations.

But GL's suckiness sure didn't help it any. :lol

Its really amazing how LOTR didn't fail to meet expectations. Sure it missed some fun stuff in the book and a few characters (namely Faramir) were wrong, but it certainly didn't fail to live up to expectations.

Lucas is prolly too laid back now.

Imagine the PT directed by Stanley Kubrick or Ridley Scott.

LOL totally. I actually think they prequels are great and I really enjoyed them once I came to terms with my expectations. I also love all the Clone Wars cartoons now. TO see my sons face as he sits staring at the screen for 20mins is magic enough for me..

2. N1 Fighter

Wow! I loved that ship. And I thought the pilots' uniforms were cool as well. They were much more ceremonial than other starfighters, and I thought that portrayed the peaceful nature of the planet well. I was more diappointed by how well they fought after being introduced as a supposedly peaceful people.

I drew my first Star Wars comic book when I was 8, thats pretty much the reason I am now doing illustrations and animations for a livelihood.

I think it helped that it seemed like those films occurred in a vacuum... and that up to that point a lot of people weren't familiar with Jackson. I think it had a similar groundbreaking feel that SW did. Also, its not really fair to compare the source material/creator of the PT and LOTR :lol

You can't really compare turning books into movies with making sequels to existing movies. It's just too different. But yes, the LOTR movies were awesome!

That's why its not really a fair comparison... I think overall Lucas did a decent job putting together the prequel stories, it was in execution that it had problems.

TPM is structured like a movie... AOTC and ROTS seem like cutscenes tied together.

Wow...that's actually the best way of explaining them I've ever seen. To be fair, I think it best describes AOTC as i think ROTS is a great SW movie. AOTC is the worst, the one I just don't care to watch at all. If I do, with scene selection it quickly becomes the Obi-Wan Kenobi movie as he has the only scenes I care to watch. Thank God Ewan MacGregor was in the prequels as he saved many parts with his awesomeness!
