Going back to Greek mythology, sometimes the knowledge of the prophecy is what causes the prophecy to be fulfilled.
It just says the chosen one will bring balance to the Force, but it doesn't say how.
Had Mace defeated Palpatine, perhaps Anakin would have done it a different way. maybe he would have risen to lead the Jedi and turn them back to what they were supposed to be, agents of the will of the Force.

Anzik.... you are the man. :bow

I'm blown away by the results of this poll----

My friends, there was no "plan" in Palpatine getting seriously maimed by his own "force lightning". Mace whipped his arse, and sissy-boy saved Palpatine's life.

I can't believe that 44% of you didn't even understand what was going on in the movie!

... listend to dvd comentary?

"Everything which has transpired has been according to my design." - Palpatine :lecture

Especially the part about Vader becoming more powerful than Either of them right? or the part where Vader turns on him and kills him in ROTJ right?

"Darth Vader will be more powerful than either of us." - Palpatine to Yoda ROTS

So um, yeah.

And he said everything which HAD transpired not WOULD transpire.

Well, Palpatine used Sith techniques to "see" into the future. And he knew that if he influenced certain people and situations, he could use them to his advantage. So in a way, he was all powerful... At least until Luke came around and didn't do as he was directed. :lol

Palpatine used Sith Battle Meditation to see what his enemies were goign to do and what would change the future.

As many before said, his true face was the wrinkled, scribbled up face; palpatine was just a sith illusion that he used to hide his true self.

Granted, Mace did use Vapaad, which allowed him to channel the dark side through his lightsaber. I'm sure mace would have lasted awhile against palpatine, but he was no match for him. Remember, palpatine even bested luke, and luke was the best swordsman and force user for a thousand years.

If you want to argue with me, go ahead, you'll lose, but you can try.

Um, no. Luke did OK against his old cyborg Dad who's heart wasn't really in killing his son. But Luke was only just beginning to master the Force.

I hope not. Lucas sucked at story telling. Especially in the PT. :monkey3

I disagree. Lucas is a fantastic storyteller. He's not much for dialogue, and his editing is very self-indulgent. But that's not the same thing. The overall story is wonderful!

And I'm in the crew that thinks Palpy could have smoked Mace whenever he wanted.

George talks a bit about what's going on in the fight on the comentary. When push comes to shove, it's still his story, and what he says goes. We can both watch the same scene, and get something different from it( as evidenced by this entire thread), but in the end, the truth is whatever George says it is :) .

I know. I was being facetious. :rock

And Dumbledore IS gay. :D

I never knew quite what to make of that scene. On the one hand, it does look like Palpy is doing his best to kill Mace and failing. On the other, for someone who was supposedly on death's door, as soon as Anakin cuts off Mace's hand, Palpatine springs right back up and fries the crap out of Mace.

I guess that's the great thing about that scene, you end being as confused as Anakin. Is he really in pain? Is he faking? What should I do?
