Re: 1/4 Hot Toys - QS005 - Avengers: AoU - 1/4 Iron Man Mark 43 Figure

It's not good, I still like the mark II suit best of all & when Sideshow said they were marking a mark II statue I initially thought I'd be getting it but when I saw it I wasn't thrilled, haven't ordered it because it's just not looking good enough to me..., the Iron Patriot looks great but I have the diecast figure & a mini-bust so don't want another, disappointed really but I suppose they have to come up with new bases for every statue (this one should've been saved for the mark III if used at all).

Agreed. :goodpost:

no... I don't usually hang out there. oh! right I guess thats a major inaccuracy.... its something I would ignore in place of a good statue, I just thought it looked good

I said the same thing, if the pose was killer I'd be more forgiving with the base. :exactly:

The paint job is so amazing on this, looks just the real thing.. I wish all the 1:6 have paint job this good, I might switch to QS if they release Mark I- IV plus the hall of armor base.

Those proportions looks top.

Re: 1/4 Hot Toys - QS005 - Avengers: AoU - 1/4 Iron Man Mark 43 Figure

I admit that suit looks ****ing amazing. Like a prop.

It may look more like you like it. But the props are painted with automotive laquer paint which is high gloss. So the not really looking like the real prop suit. Sorry.

And this may have a different paint when it's a production painted piece

The prop suits that they use for reference shots are painted with gloss like the picture you posted with the stunt person. However the CGI suits we see in the movies are matte. The CGI models are rendered in a way that depicts the suits as if they're metal. They are never coated in a thick layer of gloss. This goes for every single Mark suit on screen that we see.

It's something I personally wish Hot Toys would change and they have with this 1/4 version. The overly use of gloss on the 1/6 figures make them look cheaper.

They've used satin clear coats in the past...maybe they went for the cheaper option for the props this time

Re: 1/4 Hot Toys - QS005 - Avengers: AoU - 1/4 Iron Man Mark 43 Figure

I'm not sure why people think metal painted is dull. Once metal is painted it looks like the paint. The substrate makes little difference on appearance of the paint. The mark suits are painted with auto laquer. Auto laquer is a high gloss paint. A car painted does not look like plastic. I've seen people keep saying that the gloss looks less like metal then the matte...even when the matte 1:4 is plastic and the 1:6 gloss is metal. Kinda proves that it's just the paint. And wether or not the CG suit renders to look perfect or not is more about the limits of CG. The Pract suit could have easily been painted matte if the designers of the suit (the first movie suit was done by Stan Winston studios back when Stan was still alive, now it's essentially Legacy which is the the same people just new company) wanted it be a matte finish, but it was done as gloss because that was the most realistic. most matte paint is a harder finish to maintain then the standard 2 part auto laq.

Edit-the post above me....the bottom image is CG and the top is not the movie suit. Not a screen used prop. And the cost for a finish is not an issue.

I think the paint is likely gloss yes, however, IM flying around and getting debris blasted all over him both scratches the paint and dulls is because of dust and ****, thats why I want to dull look on my IM, its just more screen accurate. I dont need prop accuracy :lol

Re: 1/4 Hot Toys - QS005 - Avengers: AoU - 1/4 Iron Man Mark 43 Figure

Have to disagree on the bottom images not being a prop. This screen use enough for you then?

im.jpg

The finish in AoU is definitley different from the props suits used in previous films.

You do know that what's on screen is not always a prop of real suit. Most of the time it's CG. At best (other then one scene in im2) it's half CG. Most the time full CG. Including that image. You can screen grab all the shots in the world, doesn't mean it's a prop(prop is an actual practical item not a CG item). For example here's a quick pick of what it usually looks like before CG

Edit-and to be clear I worked on both IM 1 and 2. So I am clear on what the suits look like that where made.

As for what was said that flying around dulls the paint and that makes it look more matte so that looks better or more real...that's not entirely the case. Look at cars...cars can have a hundred thousand miles and spent time (like years) outside in the dust and elements wat more then and iron man suit and the paint does not turn completely dull or matte. It may chip and rust in places depending on a lot of stuff...but it doesn't generally get "sand blasted" like would need to be done to dull like you are saying. If you want a real comparison to how a metal body with paint would work a car is as close as you are going to get. I have a 1992 dodge stealth RT/TT that I've raced and spent significant time going over 100 miles an hour(a lot higher) and the paint was redone in 2000 and still looks nearly perfect. An iron man suit is usually under a year old. The paint will not be dull.

I work in VFX too and I couldn't care less that you worked on IM 1 and 2...that doesn't magically make something completely CGI when it isn't. And I like how you've chosen images to support your argument, I can do the same look.

Not one of those props has a high polish gloss coat...unlike the AoU prop which was my original point.

didnt know cars broke sound barriers in the lower atmosphere... :lol

but cars do get dirty and dull, thats why we have cars washes too, just saying IMs armor "could" "theoretically" be gloss paint and just get dirty.

Though I personally think its painted matte to begin with (in movie universe, dont care about props)

+1 on Mark 6. Unfortunately Whedon seems to not agree with us. He never liked the triangular arc reactor and its over-all design.

But he likes Thor wearing blue police pants with supermodel hair, and Black Widow with short locks and red forearm pads.

Re: 1/4 Hot Toys - QS005 - Avengers: AoU - 1/4 Iron Man Mark 43 Figure

I'm definitely with Joss about not liking the triangular arc reactor as much as the circular one. XD
