Re: Hot Toys - MMS300D11 - Avengers: AoU - Iron Man Mark 45

My POV is that unless I'm holding it there is no difference so I don't want to spend $340 for it. I think its a dumb gimmick to suck more money out of collectors.

Pretty much how I feel as well, and I'd like to add that we also get screwd on the diecast content percentage, which is far too low in most cases

With transformers it may be a nostalgia thing. Original diaclones were diecast.

Is it just me, or is anyone else bothered by the extra space between the inner and outer thigh pieces and the gap it creates between the leg and hip? (see attached pic) It kind of ruins the whole "streamlined" look the design is supposed to have.

Agreed! What is it like 30%?

Yeah I don't doubt that it is very different for you

Yeah thats crap :lol

Yup :thud: It should be full metal minus the joints, otherwise its a plastic figure w/some metal parts :gah: its not even good quality metal
and with the price you'd swear it was gold :lol or at the very least a gold/titanium alloy :monkey3

The only advantage the diecast armors have to me is increased lower body articulation ... couldn't they just incorporate that into the plastic figures as well?

I feel like they definitely could

Doesn't bother me as much as the 42/43 exposed and sometime dislocated looking shoulders. Still amazing figures, but my mind won't let go of the fact that shoulders don't look like that lol. My guess would be that the upper thigh is like that for aesthetic and articulation purposes. From the front it reveals less of the hip joint compared to the 42/43 which does indeed make the 45 look more streamlined. But with higher coverage, I'm assuming that they had to pull it out to allow for more rom during hip flexion.

Re: Hot Toys - MMS300D11 - Avengers: AoU - Iron Man Mark 45

I don't care what a figure is made from so long as it's good quality. You can't really expect a full metal figure becuase the joints need to be lubricated if it's metal on metal. And I really don't feel like changing the oil on my toys. (Not exactly what would happen, used for dramatic effect)

Cars and planes and space ships are not full metal so I don't expect a full metal figure.

As for your jest about gold alloy...lol. Well people complain about price now. Imagine if it had a 1/4 once of gold. Which is about what it would be to equal the 42 I think. That's 300 bucks in just gold. And they need better furnaces and WC and in house security to make sure it doesn't get stolen. Lol even a 1/4 oz of gold would probably put the cost north of 1000 for a standard iron man. I know you where joking (I hope). But someone's bound to ask or wonder. Lol as for other metals..they could. But most high quality metals you would think of to use are either cost prohibitive or defeat the purpose of DC. The weight. Aluminum isn't going to weigh much more then plastic. They use pot metal/white metal becuase it's weight and price and low melting point. It's really the only thing that works. And the reason it increases cost is it's harder and more expensive to manufacture. In relation to plastic injection. Especially when you buolt your business on injection molds. It's like starting a new company or starting over. The machines and production is so different. Plastic injection process and tools and machines have paid for themselves years ago. Just my two cents on why it costs more and what the diff is if anyone cares.

Re: Hot Toys - MMS300D11 - Avengers: AoU - Iron Man Mark 45

Today is the first time I looked at the price of this figure and I was shocked, came here to see what the consensus is/was.

When it comes to manufacturing plastic vs die-cast, I'm not sure the costs are THAT different, especially when the plastic option includes a metal vac component.

Let me venture an educated guess, based on Hasbro's rationale for including "talking chips" with the first Phantom Menace toys.

In that case, the Star Wars license needed to be renewed and business was already brisk - a new film was sure to create lots of sales drivers (and new copyrights, I mean characters!). If Hasbro lost the license at that point they'd look bad, and they paid a high price to keep it. To justify the high licensing advance, they needed to pass the cost along to the consumer, so prices for basic 3 3/4" figures (the backbone of the SW line for years) was going up. Hasbro looked for a cheap value-add pack-in to justify the higher price. They landed on the "talking chips"which cost next to nothing to make, but made it seem like the figures could "talk". This is a great pitch for moms, who buy most mass-market toys and love it when they "do something".

Theorize that HT has to pay Disney a higher fee for Marvel because it's the biggest brand in the marketplace now. So in order to recapture advances or higher back end fees, they need a way to rationalize a higher cost per figure. Die-cast is a logical stepping stone to the consumer, especially for Iron Man related products. And here we are. I personally see ZERO value add in a die-cast figure, but i understand some may respond to the added heft and "realistic" feel of the toy. I caved on the 42, but this new price means I won't be buying. At some point it becomes ridiculous, esp with 20+ IM variations (including some major Buyers Remorse items) already in my collection.

Will say I was pleasantly surprised to see that Vision was reasonably priced and am hoping Witch & Quicksilver will be too.

Finally, Drax?

Re: Hot Toys - MMS300D11 - Avengers: AoU - Iron Man Mark 45

If Hot Toys starts producing Muppets, it's all over. Why? Because it means Hot Toys is in bed with Disney. Now Disney is very controlling of their own image, so anything traditional Disney, will still be done, "in house" so to speak. That's their brand. But since Disney is becoming a major conglomerate, some stuff will be done outside the House of Mouse. We know they own Marvel. It's a money maker now, but doesn't fit with their traditional wholesome image. They also bought Lucasfilm, so now they own Star Wars, a HUGE money maker, but still just outside their traditional wholesome image. Now, does anyone remember that Disney also owns the Muppets? I don't think it's any coincidence that the Muppets are making a return to television. Watch for Hot Toys to start producing Muppets soon after.
I was also a huge fan of the original Muppet Show growing up. Great humor, great guests, and great fun. We'll see how the next show does.

For some reason, I actually LIKE that. I think it mkes it seem more like a real suit of armour or something.

On a different note...

If I'm completely honest, I wasn't so fond of the helmet design when I first saw it in the comicave photo, but after seeing the film and the hot toy, I think it's the most original, interesting and overall cool design yet. I love everything about this suit.
