No in the end I was happy with Spike, (costume inaccuracies aside), but this is inexcusable. I've already shown this to friends online who are in the Buffy fandom, and they are horrified with comments like "He looks like his own farther" being some of the responses so far.

If a company is making such an expensive item, then I think they should do better then this I'm afraid. They are infact professionals and so should be behaving as such.

How are they acting unprofessionally? While you may not like the way they've captured him it doesnt mean they're somehow unprofessional.

Well in my eyes they do not seem to study enough photographic reference of the character they intend to do.

Maybe it's unfair as I'm judging them based on the way myself and my colleagues work in the film/TV industry. When re-creating such a figure in 3D we would have studied long and hard the reference and tried to go for the very essence of the character, and try and keep some kind of 'vibrancy' in the peice.

I'm not saying they haven't tried, just it's not worked in my eyes, sadly.

If you're after 'sad old about to keel over Angel' well, then it's a success then.

*ETA* Another comment from a Buffy fan after laying eyes on it for the first time...

"Man, put him next to the Premium Spike and Buffy and he's going to look like the disapproving father while they are out of a date... " *hoots*

Ive just preordered him.
The stance could be better but at least they fixed the Human face quite a bit, especially the eyes AND we get a wicked vamp head to display incase people dont like the Human head, which in my opinion is 100% better than before.

Im still a little disapointed in the jacket, but im sure theres somewhere online where we can order a Leather jacket for him

Also, i dont think he is as hunches as he appears. it looks like the jacket is riding up and away from his neck. Hopefully, it will sit tighter when released

No I'm not after a 'sad old about to keel over Angel' and I think its a success. The only faults I could see as distracting are the defined wrinkles on his forehead(but not for me), other than that I am overly pleased with this ones presentation.
Its an excellent DB sculpt(uncross-eyed and detailed hair) and an even better Game Face sculpt. The outfit looks wonderful and very S5 corporate Angel and the nameplate really works well with this piece.

I see that 'vibrancy' in the piece. I actually think they captured Angel's essence pretty well. He has an aura of sadness as well as mystery and danger. He's reflexive, but also ready to fight when push comes to shove. I think they nailed the personality. So I gess it depends on the eyes of whom is looking.

I completely agree. Especially with the Game Face on the pose works wonders. It looks just like a shot from Buffy, with Angelus watching unaware Buffy in the dark, studying.

Well I'm pleased that you like him so much as you will be paying for him.

I stand by my comments though. He's wearing a costume from an era of the show that doesn't match up to his 'old man' face and the posture is awkward.

The vamp face is the best part of the whole deal.

I've just pre-ordered mine, I love that vamped out face! The human face doesn't look as bad as the preview we saw, and there is still a chance that they may make a few adjustments prior to production. I'm glad we are getting the vampire head, it is perfect and softens the blow if the human head is sub par.

Also I've warmed to the choice of jacket/coat. I'm glad that they didn't put him a leather coat now because it offers some variety when displaying the PF gang together.

Well, i think it could have been better but i have ordered him. Spike cant stand alone.

I think, if they gave him a leather jacket or a more suitabe jacket, he would be great as a Not Fade Away Angel, with the sword behind his back, it just looks like hes about to say "Well, personally, I kind of want to slay the dragon". Its how i imagine he would stand, kind of mocking the Demon Horde. So, if he had a leather jacket, he would represent Angel in his final moment in the verse.

Maybe ill just commission someone to make a leather jacket lol

I think I would have liked him a wee bit better if his stance didn't look so awkward. Maybe straighten the legs a little or something, so he's not leaning so far forward when viewed from the side.

I can see what you mean
But i think its ment to look although he is getting ready to pounce. The way hes holding the sword does look like hes doing the intimidating thing he does. Staring down a demon, so they pounce, then he pulls out his sword and rips them a few new ones

I wish I was buying this piece, because while the vamp face seems pretty much there... I'm just dying to do something to that 'human' face. Ignoring the fact that it does look older and heavier than he generally was... the big problem is that they've given his forehead the kind of wrinkle one only gets when you lift up your eyebrows as far as they will go... in an over exaggerated 'surprised' kind of way. Only then will you get those wrinkles.

But they've kept his eyebrows low. And eyebrows at that height, relaxed.. even slightly frowning... would not have forehead wrinkles like that. Wish I was getting one now... even if just for the fun of tinkering with it in my studio for fun.

The vamp head I love though. And the clothes seem good, although I guess I (like others) automatically picture him in the leather jacket with the smaller collar. But then maybe they wanted to do something different, as that's always how he's portrayed. Who knows.

From an average viewing distance though it looks like angel enough to get away with :)

That was the thing I didn't like about the Star Wars Fett PF, from the side he's leaning forward so much it looks odd to me. I'm sure there's a reason they do it.... I'd like to know what it was though.

If he pounced from that position I think the poor old sod would fall over!! :rotfl
Seriously this figure has taken aback some fans I know on other boards, who aren't into collecting, but just love the character, and so far the response to these photos has been in the negative, with more comments like "God he looks so old' to "He looks so old...not champion like at all. I doubt he could fight all the other old foggies at the supermarket trying to get the last packet of depends."

I think Darren that Sideshow in general seem to have a problem with posture for some of their more human figures. Spike was leaning at a bit of a weird angle too, but not a noticeable as Angel, it seems.

Let's just hope Sideshow fix the wrinkles and the look and people become interested in buying this piece. I bet the final piece will look good thanks to all our comments. And I hope you, and all the people who are disappointed in the old pal, purchase it eventually :monkey3

If I can get some 'Christmas' money from some of my friends to go towards this, then I'm tempted to get it just to re-cast the head, and re-work the sculpt myself. Hell, if it didn't mean a lot of 'mucking around' I'd try re-sculpting a body as well!

Also, I'd like to see the PF Buffyverse line keep going, and that isn't going to happen unless all these damn thing sell well.

I deffinately don't think Angel is as bad as you're making him sound, Sue. He has a bit of a problem like with the wrinkles and the slight bags under his eyes but other than that i think he's fine
