Re: DC's "Suicide Squad" (August 5th, 2016)

As I've said before regardless of where SS ranks in my personal Top 10 cbm's I'd still be hesitant to just openly recommend it to anyone. I'm actually surprised that it's not only being mostly embraced on this forum but apparently with the general population as well given the surprising box office it's earning even on weekdays now.

It's in your top 5 best ever right?

Nice try.

Wait, that was a serious question. You said TWS/CW, Batman Begins, and Suicide Squad, or were just just talking about replay value? Honest question.

Those weren't my top five all time *movies,* just my favorite cbm's. Otherwise yes, those would indeed be my Top Five CBM's. But of course I have to consider the fact my buzzing on SS is literally days old so I'll have to wait until another theatrical viewing, maybe blu-ray watch or two in a few months before I can accurately say for sure where it ranks.

Sorry, I should have clarified that I was talking supehero movies only.

Re: DC's "Suicide Squad" (August 5th, 2016)

Yeah, Dr. Strange may be the closest we get to a comic book-related mind**** on the big screen. Even something like Alan Moore's Swamp Thing will never be done justice, because it's too cerebral a concept. I certainly don't fault the big companies from not gambling on any of those, though they could make for very interesting, and potentially profitable smaller, indie-type movies if the properties could be outsourced in such a way.

Anything by Moore is out of the question (well, apart from his more "normal" projects), but I think the studios can do a bit more "crazy" than Doctor Strange. Play it a bit more safe, change some stuff, sure, but I think someone might be "brave" enough to do a more "otherwordly" movie.

Re: DC's "Suicide Squad" (August 5th, 2016)

Isn't Unbreakable considered the bravest most cerebral superhero movie?
I don't know, but it's probably up there. Certainly it's more of a risk than what we see from the big 2, but a far cry from something like Moore's Swamp Thing, the Invisibles, Miracleman, etc. Because even there, it all hinges on the big Shyamalan swerve, which only has so much value IMO.

Re: DC's "Suicide Squad" (August 5th, 2016)

I'd say it's the single most "grounded" superhero movie ever made, much moreso than the Nolan trilogy.
Keep coming back to this in this thread:

:rock :rock

Please don't do this to me. :lol

I'm gonna need a minute or two alone, boys.

:lol for me Avengers is something like Star Wars, you'll never catch that magic again, this is why it's so special.

However, I like SS more then Avengers for one big reason - these are the characters I grew up with, I'm a DC fanboy. The film shattered my already pretty high expectations.

Can you add my 1 on there? Just squeeze me in on one of the corners in small! :lol

:lol:goodpost:

The avatar line-up above would make for a pretty awesome SS2. :rock :lol

:lol :lol :lol

I certainly didn't take the Joker's actions toward Harley as "loving." To me he just couldn't let go of his favorite punching bag. And the zombified "good guys" are very close to what the Squad was dealt with in the comics. Once they were called to eradicate an entire covered football stadium of 60,000 fans who'd been infected with a nano-virus, and they did it.

:goodpost:

You can tell that pretty early on when he ditches her to drown in the poypul lamboginni, he tortures her for fun, and just about left her ass at ace chemicals.

I'm sure if she wasn't into the torture he would have. :lol

Eh, depends on your POV. What I'm talking about are comics in general, not just super-hero stuff. I mean, you can't call Strontium Dog, Hellblazer and the like super-hero stories. But, honestly, I think it's time for a little experimentation. Both in tone, character selection, the source material, everything. It's just that these books are so damn strange and offensive in today's climate, that they will never see the light of day. And even if they're not mind-****s, there are still interesting stuff in there that would make for great movies.

In Multiversity, there's a reallity where Superman landed on Nazi Germany, becoming Overman and helping the Nazis take control. But instead of being a stereotypical ****, he actually still wanted to help people. There's a very good story in there, and that alternate world was very cool, but due its nature, we never got a follow-up, and we likely never will. Whereas Earth-2 has its own monthly title, Earth-10 never will, because of the whole Nazis thing. Same goes for Red Skull, who would make for a great protagonist, even if he's the most iredeemable character in all of fiction... Well, besides the Plutonian. The Plutonian straight up cooked babies on panel, amongst other things.

So, in general, what I'm saying is that just putting the bad guys in the protagonists' seats, while a break from the mold, ain't exactly reinventing the genre. If CBMs are to survive, I think more variety is needed, which means more different films. 18+ films. Kids' films. All is needed. I don't need tens of sequels about heroes saving the planet, I need more intimate stories. Iron Man had the chance to be the most "non-heroic" hero, but instead gave us a fairly by-the-numbers trilogy, bar the first movie. Ellis' Extremis was brilliant, but it got butchered. Fraction's Invincible is one of my favourite runs, but that couldn't be translated that good either. Stuff like Secret Warriors, Earth-X or Hickman's Shield I won't even mention...

I know that kara will slap me in the mouth for this but i've never seen Super, Slither, They Live or even History of Violence.

But I have watched Scanners and Videodrome (both suck but Scanners make up effects were way ahead for its time). :lol

They Live has my favorite line in movie history yet i've never watched it.

Scanners has my favorite head explosion with 1970's Dawn of the Dead coming in 2nd and Toxic Avenger 3rd. :lol

Slither sucked. They Live is memorable because of one line and a 10 minute alley fight over a pair of sunglasses. A History of Violence was pretty fantastic but the way an abusive husband/wife encounter was portrayed kind of tainted the whole film for me.

You keep your stinkin' hands off him you maniacal maniac! He's gonna be Netflix's Moon Knight and I will accept no alternative! So, yeah, keep those... "funny" thoughts out of yer head!

Dream on! He's too big for Netflix. Besides, he'd be perfect for a Joker reboot. SS did a disservice to the character and I think Gyllenhaal in a Affleck film would be great. He was so good in Nightcrawler.

oh god no, he's a great actor but he does not have the chops to play mistah J.

Jared is the perfect joker for this Universe.
