Haha very funny, but I mean it in a genuine way. :lol

Like taking the viewpoint of a game designer, he just seemed to have fun with the material in MGS3 without feeling pretentious at all and that's something I could appreciate from an artistic standpoint.

:exactly: :goodpost:

Took the words from my mouth. If it was set in modern times, it wouldn't be revered so much. MGS3 is great, but it didn't impact the gaming industry nearly as the previous two.

It's easy to say "if it was set in modern times" but that point is basically moot since the setting was the biggest factor in MGS3. MGS3 is great BECAUSE it's set in that very specific time frame so putting it under hypothetical ideas of being set in "modern times" is very much beside the point given the kind of atmosphere it was going for. Sure it didn't impact the gaming industry as much as the 1st or 2nd, but if we're talking about games based exclusively on their impact then what's the point of bringing up favorites?

You're entitled to feel that way, but I feel that it was the beginning of the end for "Metal Gear" games.

The fact that MGS2 basically was a (purposely) re-skinned take on MGS1 and MGS4 had to revisit Shadow Moses is testament to how good they got it first time around.

MGS has always shone in urban espionage, it's what made MGS1 so good and different at the time, and where i think it still shines best to this day

I gotta agree with Ronri. MGS3 is my favorite of the bunch. MGS 1 is one of myfavorite games of all time though, but 3 is my favorite in the series for everything that Ronri mentioned in his post.

~~Are we only discussing MGS, or are we also including the original Metal Gear games. If we're including the originals then my list goes in this order:
MGS3
MGS1
Metal Gear
Metal Gear Solid: Ghost Babel
Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake

MGS2 is indeed a MGS1 clone, but was done in such a way it would of made sense. But was still different enough to be it's own game. Even look at the Deja Vu mission, and the fact that Big Boss keeps being referred to as "Snake." MGS1 is 20 years old and is still echoing into every single game with reoccurring scenarios.

I don't blame you for feeling that and it's perfectly fine. That said, I felt that MGS3 was just the right amount of "crazy" where Kojima didn't feel too far gone just yet and he seemed to just genuinely enjoy himself with the material and overall backdrop of the Cold War. This isn't to say that I feel the same way towards anything else that followed because I personally feel the opposite come MGS4 onwards.

So you think everything from MGS4 forward is bad?

I don't like saying "bad", unless I hold complete disdain for it so no. Still, ever since it's been moderately good to downright mediocre from MGS4 onwards.

That said, while MGS4 had some good points in my eyes (I'm one of the minority that enjoyed Liquid Ocelot as Ocelot in disguise), so far everything from MGS4 onwards just never held the same magic as the past 3 main titles for me (barring the gem that was MGR).

Well I can fully agree with that. I liked Liquid Ocelot... up until you find out it's not real... which to me, ruined any replay value. The Master Miller disguise wasn't as vital to the experience as Liquid Ocelot, so that never bothered me on replays.

MGS4 was very contrived, and lazily written. It felt so disrespectful to Snake, and he got dealt such a **** hand. And having Big Boss return... is when the series truly and undeniably jumped the shark.

I didn't mind Portable Ops, and I think it felt like it was very much in vein in of Snake Eater but not set in a jungle. Peace Walker, I've repeated until I was blue in the face... is the weakest entry in the entire series... and I think is the only reason I didn't like MGSV initially since it's coming off such a bad game IMO and of course the ousting of Hayter.

Right now, I feel neutral for MGS V.

Metal Gear Rising was such a shocking surprise to me, I really didn't expect anything from it. It just goes to show that maybe it's time for Kojima to finally move on from the series.

I definitely agree with everything you say. I liked the MGSV, and I hope the full game delivers something awesome. However, if we end up getting something closer to what 4 gave us then I'm out. I'll stick with the classics for the rest of my days. I'm still hopeful we get a remake of the original 2 Metal Gears, even if we have to have someone else besides Kojima do it.

I honestly can't see Big Boss staring in another game after this, it would be clashing with the Solid Snake era of games. Remakes are the only possible way to go after this. I honestly wish we would get remakes, and Kojima passes off the director's chair to someone else and we get a retconned sequel to MGS2's story.

MGSV should end with him going back to America and forming FOX-HOUND as a prologue to Metal Gear 1, and then bam finally shut the door on this part of the story.

I like Liquid Ocelot as either two characters, but being fond of MGS3 Ocelot, I'll admit that I enjoyed it better in retrospect since he felt more like Ocelot in personality than Liquid's more refined and commanding style anyway (plus it essentially makes Liquid untouched in MGS1).

The themes of MGS4 I felt were actually interesting, I just feel that Kojima was just so done with the series at that point that I almost wish he didn't work on it until he actually felt genuinely compelled to make something that he enjoyed. I didn't mind Portable Ops but I kinda wish that Kojima just mixed it with Peace Walker so Big Boss's story wouldn't feel so cluttered and repetitive. Strangelove's character was just about the only thing I genuinely liked about PW honestly.

I'm personally neutral towards MGSV even with the supposed "darker themes" being introduced (though I had some crits against GZ's writing).

NOTE: Also I apologize for editing my previous posts and adding onto them. Felt I should clarify some of the stuff I was saying. >_<

I don't mind darker tones to MGSV, but stop telling us how ******* dark it is. Kojima went out of his way to try and say how controversial it was going to be. Nowadays we have terrorist attacks in any country, I'm pretty sure we can handle you ******* game idiot :lol

I think if Hayter was still BB, I wouldn't be so abrasive to the game honestly. I just hope in TPP it leaves all the PW nonsense in the rear view mirror.

And yes, MPO and PW could of been one game. Just removed the stupid Peace Sentinels and Huey Emmerich and it's good to go.

I don't mind it going dark either, I just hope that all the "durk theemz" doesn't get too far into his head. :lol

I actually like Sutherland voicing BB since I don't mind the separation of Snake and BB in terms of audio-visual cues (finally). The only thing I didn't like about the changeover was how sh!!!y and callous they were towards Hayter about it. >_>

I don't think anyone would of cared about a change up, if they did this from the very beginning of the Big Boss saga. It would of been jarring to me at first, but it would of made sense. But to do it 4 games in? Eh...

And to change Ocelot from Keaton is just plain stupid. Ocelot is 40 years old in this, he should be Zimmerman by now.

Funnily enough since Ocelot is my favorite, Troy Baker's casting actually offended me more than BB's voice changeover. :lol

Please, I think we all know whatever the ending to Phantom Pain is will retcon Metal Gear 1,2, Solid and maybe even Solid 2 out of existence.

I'd actually be completely OK with MGS4 suffering that fate.

Hmm.

I'd probably rank them like this...

1. Snake Eater
2. Guns of the Patriots
3. Tactical Espionage action
4. Sons of Liberty
4. MGR: Revengeance
5. Ground Zeroes
