01. MGS - Perfect balance of everything that makes a good MGS game, most likeable set of characters and the setting is ideal. The only MGS game i've actually played that made a lasting impression on what i like and look for in a video game

02. MGS2 - I used to have MGS3 in this place but as i've got older i can appreciate the game more now i actually understand what's going on and the point of the game. Downsides are I didn't care for most of the characters in this apart from the already established characters from MGS and possibly Solidus and Emma, but i wasn't overly keen. I hate Vamp too. game play was great very fluid

03. MGS3 - At the time it had a great setting for the game and a perfect time to change it coming off MGS2, it changed the dynamic and proved MGS wasn't just a one horse trick that only works in an urban environment. I thought the story of BB was interesting and dynamic between him and the Boss was great. I actually only like BB and The Boss from this game though so i guess i liked the characters even less that MGS2

04. MGS4 - I've put this above MGSRising only because i can go back and play this more, i prefer the actual MGS games to the departure of style, but that's only personal preference. I hated they made Snake old and what seemed at the end of his tether, the revelation of BB at the end killed it for me story wise and the writing is poor with unneeded fan service and kop outs. I didn't particularly like MGS4 Cyborg Raiden either but the game play was fine

05. MGSRISING - great alternative to that standard MGS formula, much needed change up in the series and was very fun. I don't find much replay value but it doesn't take away from the game itself. Much prefer Raiden in Rising than in MGS4 and i prefer the design also

06. MGSGZ - Short, rip off but the game play was great. Bit washed up with BB storyline so it's dampened my enthusiasm for it and it's coming off PW which i can't even bring myself to play again. I quite like the open world but the camp felt a bit stale. I didn't like the way Hayter was dealt with but am totally fine with the change of VA to separate SS and BB, i just wish they had chose someone better to voice him, considering it looks like very little face mapping was used anyways

07. MGSPW - no words.

1. MGS1 - Gaming perfection.

2. MGS3 - I think this game would probably be even more loved if it weren’t for the fact that its the only numbered MGS game that already had a game in the series release prior to it on the same system. MGS1, MGS2, and MGS4 blew everyone away when first released because they were next gen Metal Gear games, MGS3 didn’t have that luxury.

3. MGS4 - Not the best written, but pretty damn epic, what it lacks in story it makes up for in the gameplay department. Most of it is fan service, but I think thats exactly how it should have been. Playing and beating this was one of the greatest gaming experience of my life, Kojima knew what he was doing, the flashbacks, returning to Shadow Moses, Liquid Ocelot vs Old Snake boss battle, the wtf ending with Big Boss, I was satisfied.

4. MGS2 - Pretty much the anti-MGS4. Incredibly written but I had major issues with some characters, bosses, and pacing. Maybe this is Kojima’s most ambitious game, but it wasn’t his most well executed.

5.MGSR - Fun Fun Fun

6. MGSPO - Enjoyed the overall game, but wasn’t a fan of most the story, really liked Gene though.

7. MGSPW - Enjoyed some of the story, loved the gameplay and co-op but most definitely my least favorite game in the series.

7. MGSGZ- Enjoyed pretty much everything except the length of the game. The atmosphere of Camp Omega, and Kiefer boss were the two best things about it.

I agree with most of that. I'm glad PW is almost at the bottom of the list. Gameplay was a lot of fun, but that was about all that I enjoyed.

I used to be partial to MGS3 over MGS2 as well, but times have changed.

Well, if we're doing a list, my top 10 would be:

1. MGS2- Near perfect sequel.

2. MGS1- Near perfect game.

3. Metal Gear Rising- Sense of excitement missing from the newer games.

4. Metal Gear Ghost Babel- Classic Metal Gear, well executed on every level.

5. MGS3 - Well balanced gameplay, beautiful to look at and excellent setting.

6. Portable Ops- Great idea, great story, great music.

7. MGS4- Erm, it looks good?

8. Metal Gear Acid 2- Great gameplay and story. Kickass music. This deserves a sequel.

9. Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake- Way ahead of its' time, awesome soundtrack.

10. Metal Gear Solid VR Missions- Loads of fun, no plot but has great easter eggs and a teaser to MGS2.

I like seeing all the variation that people order the titles, there's been some great discussions on MGS recently that i've thoroughly enjoyed reading

Some of you guys know your stuff, get out of the house or something.. :lol i jest

Count me in the group that used to liked MGS3 over MGS2, especially around the time of its' release. :lol

It didn't made my top 10. :lol

I guess I'll do a list too.

1. MGS1 - The game that literally changed my life. I was into games as a kid, but this took it to a complete new level I never thought possible. An interactive Hollywood film, with A quality acting and music. The gameplay was so new and fresh, and set the bar so high for years and year with so many copycat games trying to capture some of it's glory. Not enough can be said how great a game it is.

2. MGS2 - Intially I was pretty let down that it didn't have Snake as the main star... but after digesting the game over so many years, I've come to really love it. To me, it was the last "Metal Gear" esk game of the series. Afterward, the games became dumbed down and no longer thought provoking. I think in terms of the gameplay mechanics and engine, it was the biggest evolving point in the series. My favorite thing about the game was how much it elevated Snake's badassness. Sure it sucks to not play as him, but to see him through the eyes of another character really made me appreciate him so much more.

3. MGS3 - The most ambitious game to date in the series IMO. Such a departure from the previous games. I loved the story, and the whole James Bond spy story. The gameplay was probably the most immersive the series has gotten, with the camo index and survival viewer. Both of which I hope get revisited in a future game. My only issue with the game was, that it didn't have the depth the previous two games did. But I can appreciate the game since it seems very self contained, much like MGS1. The whole relationship between Naked Snake and the Boss was perfectly done. I just hope Kojima never does a game strictly about the Boss and complete ruin her image, like he's done with Big Boss after MGS3.

4. MGS4 - Only picking this over MGR, since MGR doesn't play like a standard MG game. It was great playing as Snake again... but I feel slighted by Kojima since it wasn't the Snake I wanted to play as. I remember getting so upset that he was an old man in this, plus I hated his mustache in the beginning. The writing is poor, but everything else about the game... the gameplay, the engine and visuals are excellent even today. It was a missed opportunity on how to conclude the series.

5. MGR - Excellent departure from the series. I thought it was the doom of the series, but I was so wrong. I was extremely worried it would ruin the ending that MGS4 gave us, but since it only alluded very very little to the previous games... it seems like an alternate what-if universe. The gameplay is excellent, and truly made Raiden a complete badass after failed attempts to really get the fans behind him. I liked him more in MGS4, but he was too dark and brooding for me to like him.

6. MPO - A extremely underrated game, and no matter what Kojima says it's ****ing canon. It was great to see Big Boss back in the spotlight again, before his over exposure. And meeting Campbell when he was young, along with Gray Fox... although the whole super soldier program seemed silly to me. The game was a great sequel to Snake Eater.

7. MGSV GZ - I like the more serious tone, although we don't need to be constantly reminded by Kojima about it... I think the gameplay is excellent, and I'm looking forward to doing a giant sandbox in TPP. My only real issues are Hayter's abrupt and disrespectful ousting, most of Kiefer's delivery, and the continuation of PW's story.

8. MGSPW - Full retard.

Great taste ;)

I guess I'll do a list too.

:goodpost::goodpost::goodpost:

MPO is definitely underrated, and I really wanna play it again. You can get it for the Vita (and use dual analog sticks!) if you're in the UK, but not for US account owners. Damn.

And yeah it feels more "Metal Gear" than Peace Walker.

It also has one of the best singles done in any of the games.

Heavens Divide... meh.

For some reason when i was younger i always thought it was proper cool how he just fell asleep

MGS2 has the best intro too (the tanker intro)

On a side note i always like the briefing on MGS1 where you saw snake with the long hair before he gets it cut

MGS1 briefing is one of the many gems from that game. Having Yoji animate it was a brilliant choice. The Twin Snakes briefing sucked bawz.

It's been a long time Snake.

I should've known you were behind this, Colonel.

That's no way to greet an old war buddy Snake.

What do you want from me?

Yeah... I read that, and the voice over from the game played in my head :lol

...I've played that game... too many times.

Roy Campbell: That's why we really need you for this mission.

Naomi: You're the only one who can beat him. Now that I've met you, I know. You've got something that he doesn't. I can see it in your eyes.

Snake: Why don't I find that thought more conforting?

It's the only way to read it :lol

I need to borrow your scissors.

What are you going to do?

Don't worry. Just going to clean myself up a little.

Huh?

I don't want to be mistaken for the leader of the terrorists.

MGS1 Codec was another great part of the game, even down to the animated pictures as you said in a previous post i think

I had a friend when i was younger who NEVER listened to the codec and skipped it all i was like are you for real??

Just in case anyone missed it- if you don't view all the briefing files in MGS1 you'll get an alternate cutscene.

Speaking of alternate cutscenes, there are 4 more that I recall.

- Completing the VR Missions prompts a comment from Snake during the Codec conversation on the Helipad.
- Not picking up a SOCOM prompts an alternate cutscene with Meryl, with different music.
- Not being spotted up to the air vents in the Tank Hangar omits the cutscene where the guards discuss about a second intruder.
- Killing the Ravens will prompt a comment from Vulcan Raven when you meet him.
- Calling Miller during the before he tells you about Naomi will trigger a correction from Miller regarding the Ravens, as Snake mistook them for crows. This carries over when you call Otacon as well.
