Looks like I'm late to the party - pissed and shat, $70 debates and Faramir in drag. Seriously, who the hell is that? What am I missing?

I got my order in easily today as soon as the PPO went live. Actually my wife did it for me. I was stuck at work with no computer access - they hadn't connected mine yet so they sent me to the basement to build models with another intern.

The figures are cool with me, price and all - though I would have liked to see Sam come with his Elvish rope. I'm glad they both come with the Lothlorien cloak! I can't wait to add these two to the Fellowship. Hopefully there's another release to tide us over until these ship next year.

However, I can see the non-exclusive version taking a long time before they are sold out.

And that for me is the most important point here. We can argue as much as we want about the price, but for me the more important issue is the ES. 1500 for the exclusives??!! Going off the previous releases, this means that the standard version will have a higher ES. The exclusives haven't sold out yet (not too surprising, as the exclusives aren't exactly "must haves" so I suspect people will wait to pick up the regular versions from retailers for less), and if there are even more of the standard version then they are just not going to sell out to soon either (if at all). The upshot of that will be that the LotR line will not be seen as a priority by SS (thats assuming it is at the moment of course! :) ) and I suspect we'll be unlikely to progress much beyond the Fellowship and perhaps a few baddies (and Faramir of course...). Overall it is the combination of the price and the ES that could kill this line completely..... :( I happen to think that the price is a little high, I expected about 60-65, so the difference isn't massive, but for that price I expected the ES to be 750-1000 max... Oh, and where is Frodo's mithril coat??

I can not believe some of the complaining about these two figures.

I guess people really do just try to find something to complain about with everything. If it isnt the look of the item then its the price or edition size. I think these are very fairly priced. I mean just look at the amount of stuff that comes with them and I dont care if they are smaller figures.

Folks there are alot of cars out there that are very small that cost 3 X more than some huge trucks so the price is really not an issue in my book. The edition size is 250 less than the other exclusive so far. Remember the only exclusives that sell out on the first day are the Star Wars ones. I see plenty of other 12" exclusive that dont sell out for months. Im sure these will all be gone today before the sun sets.

Plus the body is basically a Hot Toys body so those arent exactly as cheap as your standard Sideshow body.

I cannot beleive these 2 are still avaliable. I thought they would be sold out by now. I hope this will not effect more figures being made. These are 2 main characters to boot and the story is pretty much circled around them.

For me $70 for a Hobbit is about my max point -- so SS is smart. They figured that out, I don't know how. If these Hobbits were $80 I'd be out of this line.

If you can project out a year from now when the figures may be $75, will you be out of the line?

Sorry people around here don't like me and my post count isn't high and somehow that invalidates my opinion, but I'm opinionated and trying to express an option that many here don't like to hear... the point that SSC did kick a lot of people out of the line already and are on the verge of kicking more out with the constant price increase (whether those increases are substantiated or not). And unfortunately a large part of the collecting community not only has no sympathy for that but actually subtly justifies and to the extreme case welcomes it.

Sorry Josh, you completely misunderstood me there, and perhaps, that is where we differ so very much. I campaign for lower prises, so that EVERYONE can benefit, regardless if they are poor of rich. I guess, in the good old days, people would call me a socialist! :D
Besides, this really isn't about what I can afford or not, it is about that I'm so tired of people literally begging SSC to pull the money out of their pockets. That's just a nasty side affect of collecting I have to think: you need the next kick, no matter what!

Me too. Only, I think they like you better. :lol

If they are substantiated what is the problem?

You forgot the elitist-mobile:

Only elitists ski, Marc. :rotfl

Just for the record. I want to say I never intended to call anyone directly an elitist. The first time "elistist" was brought up, I said there was a general subtext from some people which had that tone. I wasn't even speaking directly about this thread. Its been happening well over the last 10+ years that I have been involved in the collecting community. Back from the rec.arts. message board days. Unfortunately Josh took personal offense and brought himself into it and unfortunately I took the stance that if you're getting offended perhaps you have a reason to be. If thats not the case Josh, then I apologize.

I still stand by that I often feel that the "understanding" for price increases often has a subtext of actually "encouraging" it. If this doesn't pertain to you and you're simply saying "I still think its worth it." Great, no need to be offended. I am actually in the same boat, or else I wouldn't have bought them.

That said, from my point of view, I believe if I am not constantly bringing up my displeasure for prices or quality problems, etc, that they will get worse or remain unresolved.

Thanks for the time.

Well, because even if a Lexus' cost is substantiated by its quality, there would still be a point where a lot of people couldn't afford it.

If you up the quality too high, you can edge people out.

I am sure the PFs are substantiated to cost $250+ but its out of my price range. I don't want 12" figures to become out of my price range.

I thought people who collected wanted the highest quality possible. If you can't afford the car don't buy it I guess. Hell I want a Porche but I don't complain to them about the prices. I don't buy many PF's just do to the price. Would I like to have some? Sure. But I won't complain about the price. If you can't afford it I am sorry. That truly sucks. But don't complain about a company charging a substantiated price for an item only because it is out of your reach. I don't think that is fair. I don't like the price of many things but I buy them. Take gas for example. It has been seeing its highest prices ever but that didn't stop me from buying an SUV because I wanted one. I don't know how else to explain it.

It's funny when people treat toys like life necessities and compare them as such.

...Sorry people around here don't like me and my post count isn't high and somehow that invalidates my opinion, ...

Thats crap. I like you. You are an awesome customizer too. I don't think post count gives any validity to anyone here. I mean look at the DarkLord. He has the second largest count, but noone cares what he says. :monkey3

I was really looking forward to these, and was planning on ordering them. But I ended up not doing it. Don't get me wrong, I'll eventually get these, but I won't be ordering the exclusives from Sideshow. Here's why:
1. The exclusives just don't do it for me. Thus I can get the regular editions
2. The price
2a. I was planning on using $40 worth of points on these, but the $30 difference on just one of the figures is a little bit more than I wanted, since I won't earn points on the difference
2b. I'm trying to cut back on spending and can't justify ordering them for this much. I'll take my chances at being able to pick them up cheaper later.

That's just me.
They do look great, though.
