So what can be done with the DiD shoulder width? Any ideas?

thenam will probably be posting pics of his suggested FMCs body, maybe that will work instead.

Well, you could glue those shoulder flaps down I suppose. Or just adjust them as up as possible so you don't get that droopy wide shoulder look.

You got him together fast, even the gloves!

I gave up on the gloves after 30 minutes. :lol
dont ask me how i did it. it was a ^^^^^. and for the record, those gloves are staying on forever. im never gonna go through that again.

i really like this figure as is. i might just switch out the head with the TB head and be done with it. after a DA repaint of course. the clothing and weapons are very detailed. he should have no problem blending in with the SS figures.

here's gimli with SS frodo's elven cloak. dont know if anyone posted him wearing this yet. looks pretty good. looks a little short from the front but from the back it looks good. dont know how gimli wears his axe on his back while wearing the cloak so i just shoved it underneath.

Okay guys. Got all 3 Gimlis in today. I compared the ToyBiz soft body to the Marvel Famous Covers' Captain America. Good news and bad news. They're completely compatible as it's pretty much the same body, only cheaper. Bad news, they're exactly the same height! :rotfl So that complete waste of time was worth it I guess. Might still work if you wanna add a bit of bulk to Gimli, but I'm sticking with the standard one. Additionally, the head rocks but will need a decent repaint to expose the awesome sculpt and make it on par with Sideshow's (iCruise, can I PM you about that?).

I was extremely disappointed with the DiD. He's too tall and the likeness just isn't there at all. He's a great dwarf and not a bad LOTR Gimli, but not necessarily John Rhys-Davies' Gimli. Additionally, not only did my hands turn colors from handling the fabrics, has glitter everywhere on the robes (I HAAAAATE GLITTER GRRRRRRR), but it seems almost cheaper than the ToyBiz and stinks, literally (anyone else have this issue?). I don't know why, but my brain associated the smell to that smell you have left on your hands after a night full of beerfest with your buds and an even later night with your sister's friend, chunky Chasey who snuck in (do the math :yuck). At least the weapons are nice so it's worth picking up to deck out the ToyBiz soft with Sideshow quality weapons.

The good news about the Rotocast is that the shoulder armor rocks and can be cut off with a razor blade and slipped over the arms of the ToyBiz soft. The bad news is I actually prefer the gauntlets and boots of ToyBiz's soft version. So I paid $12 for good shoulder armor.

EDIT: With that, if funds are tight for you, I'd recommend just picking up the ToyBiz, give the head a good repaint and live with the substandard weapons. Otherwise, if your OCD gets the better of you, like it did me, get it all to make that great looking ToyBiz soft Gimli that much greater.

I'm tired. I read the whole post and didn't get it-so I reread:lol. I kept screwing up Gandalf/Gandolf.

:lol

Had that happen once... maybe twice.

Yep, I think its clear now that the ToyBiz soft is the way to go for the sculpt and gauntlets. DiD for the clothing (not sure about the price for extra nasty smell) and weapons. Roto for those who want real hard shoulder armor.

Too bad the body didn't work out. Figured it was too easy. Back to chopping the DiD body down to size.

I doubt that raising the TB up to size will work because the DID clothing will just be too bulky on him.

BTW, trying water treatment on the clothing to get the smell, and the running colors, out.

At this point, all I have in hand is the rotocast TB Gimli, but the DID is on the way. I'm going to see if there's some way of combining those parts into something decent without having to buy the soft goods TB figure as well.

I have a gift certificate that I'll probably use on another hobbit, but I want to save that for Merry or Pippin. Which do you think would be the better choice to get, Sam or Frodo?

I wonder if raising a Hobbit body up would work?

Probably. So would that DML Nazi boy figure. Or the DiD we have with adjustments. Whatever body you got, just make it work... no need to go nuts about this. Dwing's Gimli looks terrific. If I can get mine to look like that, I'm happy and done with this. Next fig...

Merry or Pippin. Which do you think would be the better choice to get, Sam or Frodo?

Not sure, but Frodo has a good vest to make yellow. Sam has a good jacket for either. Either pant will work.

Depends who you want to make first.

Don't you need sculpts before you even start this? No one's commissioned anyone yet.

I'd put the DiD back on ebaY sans weapons and pick up the ToyBiz soft Gimli. He's by far better than the others.

Well, head sculpts are of course an integral part of the process, but I wanted to get the hobbits while they were still available for gift card use. Things do drop off the list without warning, and I don't think I am hardcore enough about this to pay full price for a hobbit, plus all the extra stuff required to convert him into another character.

I suppose I could get one of them and see if the clothing will bleach and dye well. Worst case scenario I could try and use the body for Gimli.

Sorry I didn't see this thread earlier - the thinner Famous Covers figures are also 9" but aren't as buff as Gimli, they were used for the TB hobbits, Frodo and Bilbo. Sabertooth and Hulk are bigger and taller though, but are way too buff for Gimli.

I got a new DiD Gimli today and have to agree that only the weapons are really of use. I think I'll probably do what SSC would have done and modify a hobbit body with leg extensions.

Hey, does anybody want the rest of the Rotocast Glimli (minus shoulders and axes)? I'm just gonna end up tossing the rest and there's still good TB boots, gauntlets and a headsculpt/helmet there.

Here's an old shot I took of the DiD "Timo Ducca" Hitler Youth figure and Frodo to show the difference in proportions. Judge for yourselves, but it looks to me like the boy figure will still require a fair amount of frankensteining to turn him into a Dwarf.

For anyone not satisfied with using the DiD Gimli body, then modding a hobbit body might be the best way to go. Maybe adding some height to the legs and beefing up the torso with a "fat suit" of some sort would do the trick.

I don't plan to display my DiD Gimli with the hobbits, so I'm not too concerned with screen accurate proportions. Cutting 1/4 inch out of the DiD figure's thighs should give me the height I want for displaying him with Aragorn and Legolas, and sounds easier than some of the other operations being discussed.
