After taking a closer look at the SS sculpt in reviews, and seeing the very basic paint job and lack of any skin texture, the HT figure is suddenly looking a lot better to me now. Even if the underlying likeness isn't as strong, I still prefer the greater realism and overall higher quality look it has.

I think most here will eventually come to this conclusion also.

This photo is a close up of the SSC production figure taken by someone here on the boards. I have no idea how you see a basic paint job and a lack of skin texture and realism...
I know myself well enough to know that I will eventually buy the HT version. Probably sooner than later. But I’m not going to try and convince myself the the hs will be better than the one I have on display now, because I think it’s pretty evident that it isn’t.

From my collection POV, I sold my SS V1 years ago, never considered V2 (lack of accessories) and I have HT on preorder. There’s no point in me analyzing SSV2 with HT because I’m not buying SSv2 or even tempted to after the reveal of HT's. I'm just moving forward with HT. Both are great. I can see those who own SSV2 making the tighter comparison and I totally understand. I own the SSV1 Fett and also purchased HT ESB Fett. I was making comparison too those two as well and to this day there are many things I still love about my SSv1 Fett (aka dirty pants).

I have not been watching the unboxing reviews coming out now (watched the initial few up to Justin’s). I want to wait until I receive mine to feel the impact of my purchase. To many reviews dilutes the fun when you receive your own.

Great looking sculpt indeed. Barely visible but I never noticed SSC engraved the tattoo lines as well. Doesn’t appear as deep as HT but looks like the painter of that one didn’t stay within the lines.

I own both sideshow versions and the hot toys version. And I think the sideshow v2 sculpt is absolutely amazing and the paint app on my v2 from the first run is very very good. I also like the look of the sideshow over the hot toys one as the hot toys one feels sorta chunky and his neck is indeed short. The hot toys one also has a little better pint app but honestly not by much. This was easily sideshows best figure with the v2 Maul.

I have to concur that my SS V2 looks just like that close up photo a few posts up. If you get that paint app. you just got a home-run; if not well...

Bo Shrek...I used trader bucks for the SS V2 that was on display at Toy Traders on Saturday FYI. I just can't swing the $400+ CAD the DX 16 will run and I shudder to think what they will charge for the 17...

I have never said this before but SS beats HT. SS knocked it out of the park with their V2. They usually have good sculpts but SS Achilles heel as always been flesh paint apps. Not an issue with maul. Not sure what I will do but leaning toward Just keeping my SS. May just do both though. I do like both and like the character.

having both is great but after getting the hot toys one i was pretty underwhelmed. That's not to say he isn't an amazing figure, he is, but the sideshow v2 is fantastic and feels hot toys quality or damn close.

Another review is up:

I think, while I have to agree that the Sideshow v2 has better likeness, the Hot Toys version is still better as a whole package in terms of overall quality, details and display options.

For a moment I was almost going for the sideshow v2. But at the end I am going to stay with the Hot Toys version.

Several people complained that the later batches of SS v2 Maul's had pretty bad paint apps. Kaan and Jaymig were among them, see their pictures below -- smears, smudges, separated lines, etc.

Luck of the draw whether your SS Maul will be better than HT's face paint...

Based on that video, it looks like HT has a pretty evident seam on the head like Sideshow.

OK, had to double check. Now I see it.

And from that last review and others...confirmation that there is no ankle articulation on the DX...you have to say that is an oversight.

Wasn't expecting ankle articulation based on the promo pictures and the reviews so far.

The very first video posted here showed the guy (French guy?) bending the boots -- they separate from the heel in the back to lean forward and it looked like there is some side to side movement attainable.

I'm going to be lucky enough to have the best of both worlds, as the SSC is displayed (as below), and the HT will be with the cloak on, standing next to his Speeder (which will hide his "weaknesses" - too chunky, no neck, not as good likeness).

And they're on opposite sides of the collection room :yess:

It looks good from two inches back too. It’s an awesome figure
