The PT upset those who wanted something more like the OT. Those folks eventually got what they wanted with TFA and RO, but what those latest movies show is that you pretty much have to remake or expand the original film to recapture that spirit.

The PT was always going to have a different tone. It was set at the glittering height of the Republic, an almost mythical time of regality. It had to feel different to reflect "a more civilised age".

Those who weren't expecting politics obviously never read the foreword of the original Star Wars novelisation.

Those who thought Anakin wasn't Vader-like enough... that's the point. The less Vader-like, the more dramatic the transformation.

To his credit Lucas stands by the PT to this day and makes no apologies for it. What many see as mistakes were quite deliberate decisions on his part. He earned the right to make the films for himself (and his kids); whether the moviegoing public liked them was secondary. Which is refreshing in its artistic freedom.

For the record, I grew up with the OT, was disappointed with TPM but thought AOTC and ROTS were great.

But I still prefer the OT and, like SilverStar above, wanted nothing more from the PT than a back story.

Be careful trying to speak for people whose opinions you don't share. Your claims above don't explain what I wanted from the PT or TFA/RO at all.

I never expected or demanded that the PT be more like the OT. Unless you're referring to quality of course. I was really looking forward to SW films set during the "Golden Age" and was actually annoyed at George's "make them rhyme with the OT" approach. RO on the other hand I love not because it feels like the OT all over again but rather because it feels more like an 80's Jim Cameron flick. Gritty war and action, the threat of nuclear annihilation, a strong yet serious leading lady and a leading man who gets wounded and requires the girl's help to walk at the end.

I was put off by the prequels because I found them to be lame, nothing more. I love TFA *in spite of* it's derivative nature, not because of it. And RO, well, not much more needs to be said about that now does it. ;)

That's OK, as per my post I was only speaking for "those who wanted something more like the OT". Didn't mean to give the impression I was speaking for all prequel deniers/bashers. ;)

Oh you were citing people who wanted something more like the OT as merely one faction of PT bashers? All right I can go with that. :D

The way I read your first sentence was that if you were upset by the PT then it's because that's the group that you were in.

Nah, I'm old enough to have seen 'em all theatrically. I too am a geezer!

I should add, preconceptions are unavaoidable and can work both ways. I liked the PT cos it was Star Wars, others hated it cos it was Star Wars (but not "SW enough").

Re: Hot Toys Episode 3 Anakin

All this arguing about PT vs OT reminds me of this.

Disney has captured the essence of Star Wars in both their films so far - I don't think anyone can really deny that. The films may have their detracting aspects, but it feels the part.

TFA feels nothing like a star wars film.

HT bring on that 1/6 Pod Racer.

The SE's don't count! ;)

Wait a minute, how old ARE you? Because my mom took me to every OT film and she doesn't give a rip about them. Maybe you're *too* old... :D

I was 10 when the original finally hit Down Under in '78. My only recollection was seeing it at the drive-in but I may have also seen it at the cinema.

I have a clearer recollection of seeing ESB and ROTJ at the cinema.

Speaking of the SE, another indication of my pro-SW bias is that I don't mind any of the changes except Greedo shooting first!

Disney ? Nope... TFA was the only film in the entire series I would never bother to rewatch. SW Essence ? :thud:

..and I would never buy single firgues from that TFA film. That horrible feeling when I went to watch it in the cinema though..it seems Disney just ruin everything about SW universe that I love so far :gah:. I could say I hate the Sequel as much as some people here hate the PT.

I don't hate TFA..it was good to see Star Wars again and I was excited when I saw it but if I'm honest the movie overall was pretty weak. It was just too much of an homage....I really like Kylo Ren and Rey as new characters but really could care less about the rest of new characters. Hopefully they don't try to make a copy of Empires Strike back but go in a totally different direction.

Re: Hot Toys Episode 3 Anakin

I pity the day when I make such a statement about SW. It's bound to happen too with Disney's plans to release new movies every year forever.

Very unlikely. Disney will run out of director long before that :p

Completely disagree. Was it too much of an homage? Maybe. I see why they went that route though. But it certainly felt like a Star Wars film, IMO. More so than Rogue One even and I enjoyed both.

Some people may not have enjoyed most of what TFA had offer. But let's remember the words we use to describe our thoughts. Feels "nothing" like a Star Wars film? Really? The score, the vehicles, the costumes, the practical effects, heck the general complaint is that it is TOO similar to the original film and it feels "nothing" like a Star Wars film?

Love them all myself. They all have weak points (some more than others) but i can look past the faults and enjoy them for what they are. EP4 would be my favorite as i watched it on the big screen when it came out and it blew my little mind. EP1 would be my last on the list because of Jar Jar.

I work at a fire department and we had some new recruits training a few years ago. seven of them with ages ranging between 18 and 22. We were all having lunch and they started talking SW, i was just listening. They all trashed the OT and mad fun of the effects, lightsaber fights, costumes, etc but had nothing but praise for the PT. I never said anything but I was very suprised.

The PT fans shall inherit the Earth. And after them, the ST fans.

Remember, Vader vs Obi-Wan in Ep IV blew us away because it was like nothing we'd ever seen before. But to a modern audience their Ep III battle is far superior.
