I think it way too easy to dismiss those who had trouble with the movie like that especially the ALIEN and yurtoodumbtogetit arguments. Of course i'm not talking about the haters or average joes who need a movie to go BOOM BOOM BOOM every 10 minutes ^^
I've had two disappointment with the movie.

First, it was basically a remake of ALIEN bigger and louder, using a lot of the ALIEN original script unused ideas and concepts.
But i'm biased because they are great ideas for the ALIEN universe that I've known for years so they were not fresh for me but probably for someone who never read them.

Then the Engineer angle was not as well used as in the scripts where its pretty smart especially the whole terraformation tech wich is one of the main drive for for Weyland corp, even if i definitely like Weylands quest for eternity wich gives the movie a neat religious/mythological theme but both motivations could have been used making the movie even smarter.

But yeah even if the movie has its flaws its doesnt deserve to be hated :)

My main issue with the film is that they completely retconned what was original planned to be a direct prequel to Alien. If you have legitimate constructive criticism of the film have at it and I respect it. But most film viewers are stupid and immediately dismiss it.

I agree with you on on that retcon.
In the making of you get the sense that it was always up in the air until the very last minute to make it or not a direct prequel. I too would have preferred a direct prequel, that closes the book on ALIEN and in its last minute goes on its own way with Shaw and David searching for the Engineers home world.
Spaith script ALIENS: ENGINEERS features aliens and new creatures all mixed with terraforming it was really good.
The mercs angle was way much cooler too.
And seriously ending the movie on a planet called LV423 with a juggernaut crash is a bit too much a travesty. Whats worst is that i feel that they will want to actually close the book on the Space Jockey and will end up going back to it.

Now i want my damn Engineer Hot Toys!

No way. Direct prequels are lame as you know the ending.
Check out THE THING prequel

Also the ship in Alien didn't crash, it landed. And thousands of years ago.
It wouldn't have made any sense.

Not at all.

Aliens - Alien3 - and Alien 4 were remakes of Alien.
All repeat monster mashes with slight adjustments.

Truckers on Space - Marines in Space - Convicts in Space - Bounty Hunters in Space

Prometheus was more like the original Star Beast script yes. But this actually took it a step beyond. Even Segorney Weaver said Prometheus took the series back to the mystery and discovery. Where she always thought it should have gone.

Not at all like the original ALIEN script but yes it was like Starbeast aka ALIEN original script, huh?

Truckers on Space - Marines in Space - Convicts in Space - Bounty Hunters in Space
and now Scientist in space with monsters chasing them...

Yes the whole Engineer angle is very important but badly treated in the movie alas, at leats not as good as in the scripts.

I know the Derelict parked on LV426 :) i'm the one who asked the question to Scott at the french 15mins preview he corrected me saying it did not crashed but parked wich implied that he had some sort of plan for it.

I don't think prequel are a bad idea.
Knowing the ending is irrelevant, TITANIC anyone?
Its all about execution.
The THING is a fake prequel more like a remake that tries to attach the wagons to THE THING in the last minutes. On its own i think its a decent remake with too much CGI.

The Juggernaut being the Derelict from ALIEN would have been the cherry on top not the main subject or what would have driven the story.

You've read Spaith script?

I agree!! and ive said before Alien is inspired by HP Lovecrafts "At The Mountains of Madness". Once you have read "Mountains of Madness", you will see where Prometheus came from and why and how it relates to and inspired the entire Alien franchise. (as well as it inspired almost every sci-fi movie ever made)

Loved Prometheus!!! Everything with Shaw, David, Weyland, Vickers, and the Engineers was brilliant. Just the sub-characters had their character development issues. But it didn't take away from my love of the movie because i was more focused on Shaw. Just like with Alien, i was focused on Ripley and didnt really care what happened to everyone else.

But i should say, thats fine if others don't like it and want to hate on it. Thats their own opinion. I loved it, so nothing anyone else says will change my opinion. We all like and dislike different things.

Alien didn't have the original Starbeast script
it was massively changed, hence what we got - hence what the sequels tried to copy.

LOGIC :)

great post, morphosis; i agree.
Personally, i am so very happy that we did not get a direct prequel. Different strokes for different folks.

Me last weekend!

This is interesting because I always assumed the ship crashed. Remember Ripley says that the message wasn't an SOS but a warning in Alien. That's also why I thought the Space Jockey as Engineer was a surprise. Originally I assumed the Space Jockey was a transporter or something. Maybe even a good guy who got these eggs and ditched them on the planet. Knowing that they were too dangerous. So much that they even infected him.

I need to read At the Mountains of Madness. I was waiting to see the Guillermo del Toro version. I believe he stopped making the movie because of Prometheus but then started again after seeing Prometheus. I'm going to get one of the Lovecraft collections soon. I'll probably read the story first.

I love this gif. The reactions from everyone else in the background contrasting with Tommy Lee Jones is great. :rotfl
