R rated film- what do they want- not a family oriented crowd suction like Avengers...Fox knew this going in with that rating- it is doing fine for what it is

Yeah, those numbers are good for R.

not quite. as of 19th june, the worldwide box office tally is about us$222.5m. that's on an estimated budget of $150 to $200m incl marketing (depending on who you ask).

even as r-rated pics go, this is a mediocre b.o. performance due to the film's cost.

i'd love to see a sequel, but sadly the numbers aren't very encouraging. :(

Not sure what you base this on. R rated movies don't make as much as PG. That is a strong number for an R.

I don't see how that's mediocre considering it's been out only two weeks... I think it's doing fine.

The reason I disagree is that with The Empire Strikes Back Han Solo was in immediate peril and the heroes went off to rescue him from said peril. The engineers in Prometheus might have it in for humankind but there's nothing in the story to suggest that the Earth is in any impending danger at all. Apparently the animosity dates back 2,000 years and was only jump started by the Prometheus opening a can of worms (no pun intended) by its arrival on LV-223. With the death of the only engineer who actually tries to carry out mankind's extinction for all we know the rest of them won't get around to trying again for another two, ten thousand, or ten million years, if at all! Not really something that demands an immediate follow-up resolution.

For all intents and purposes LV-223 was a dead planet, the crew of the Prometheus revived it and then subsequently laid it to rest again. We can assume that Shaw is now off on a Richard Dreyfuss journey, maybe she'll encounter more destruction or maybe she'll encounter a homeworld of enlightened engineers who condemn the desctructive intentions of one rogue weapons testing facility. Who knows.

We didn't know if Ripley was ever going to make it home after ALIEN or if MacReady had any snowball's chance of surviving the night after THE THING and we didn't need to. The compartmentalized threat that was introduced in the film was resolved.

Alright, I see what you are saying if immediate peril or impending peril are your gauge. I agree the film ended on a note that was satisfactory enough to wrap up the immediate threat,

Remember though, aside from Earth's latent peril, there's still a more immediate peril--Shaw's.
We know that the Engineers are hostile to Humans,
and now she's flies into the Lion's Den, heading towards the Death Star, and walking toward Mordor (Just Like Han going to Jabba's Palace...)
We don't know if she'll be mounted on a wall (both puns intended) or if she'll escape with her life.

Right, we didn't need to know about Ripley because dramatically, the hero, Ripley was resolved that she'd be ok at the end of the film, and therefore decided it was time to make her final report and sign off and go to hypersleep. That's a good enough end to the series - we'd assume she'd be ok -- (that's why the sequel was a nice opening, because it opens up a new dilemma.)
Shaw on the other hand is not resolved that everything will be ok -- she's already on a new mission that may cost her life, and she has every reason to believe she'll die, but her sacrifice is for a greater cause. Will she survive this new battle and how does she succeed?--

That's the reason Scott has the next film already lined up - to answer those questions. Ridley Scott very much planned the story to take place over a couple or more films, because 2 hours is not enough time to tell the whole story. (Ridley admitted that also knowing the business he can't go well over two hours and minimize the number of bums in the seats in a day) Whether or not anyone thinks this requires a sequel, Ridley Scott planned it that way, down to the current viral marketing.

That said, I hope to see all the major characters made by Hot Toys -- at Least Shaw (with the baby squid thing), David in spacesuit (with one of the pods), The Engineer WITH protoxeno/deacon, (not necessarily bursting out) and Vickers...with her flamethrower.

it's really not that hard, guys. the movie needs to make at least twice its budget to be considered profitable, and at the rate the dropoffs are happening each week (60 to 70%), it's starting to seem like a far cry.

you don't seriously think the studio suits looked at the current numbers for prometheus and decided, "hey that's a perfectly fine BO performance!" they knew full well going in that it was an R, yet they definitely expected it to do better, what with the massive advertising & promotions campaign leading up to its release. they practically showed the entire film with the amount of virals, trailers, featurettes, and tv spots. it was obvious fox wanted this to be a massive franchise re-starter.

frankly, i'll be more than happy to be wrong, and the film wracks up a huge BO thanks to the global territories. then we'll get to see a sequel. but i ain't holding my breath...

Well, a couple of things -

This is doing very well for an R rated movie.

But, it is true the general rule of thumb is that double the budget is what studios want to see for a film to be a financial success.

AND it is true that Blu Ray and DVD (plus merchandising) does play a bit role in it as well, and with Scott's name attached and the connection to a long-running franchise those things are much more valuable then if this were some new sci-fi film.

So, in essence you're all right.

I will say, though, the movie is $35m away from making double it's budget worldwide. Even if Prometheus has another big drop this next week, it should take a big chunk of that away just in the US.

While $260m might be impossible, don't count it out yet. For one thing, the movie is doing very well in the UK. Its #1 for the third week.

There really isn't any new competition for the same audience for a couple weeks yet (I don't count Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter) so it could have better legs than, say, if Dark Knight or Spider-man was coming out this weekend.

Cant wait for the blue ray , maybe my purchase will tip the budget. No but seriously want a Prometheus 2 or what ever they would call it
