Its been compared to Robocop 2 a lot....unknown whether that was an intentional thing but Faverau did consciously change the villain from The Mandarin to Iron Monger so its a possibility that the same feel was attempted to be captured.

Just saw it last night for the first time. AWESOME MOVIE! I haven't read this whole thread but did anyone else get a serious "Robocop 2" vibe from the finale? Huge bulky robot vs. human sized robot, fighting under buildings, on rooftops, and city streets. Human robot jumps on top of the big one and pulls out some crucial wired components from the back of its neck. Very cool. Loved the climaxes of both movies. :D

I saw this after the onslaught of "best superhero movie ever" hype and it still didn't disappoint! Fantastic origin story and an all around great movie. They did a great job of keeping everything fresh while still following what is really a very common formula for a comic book origin tale.

I like that instead of the new superhero checking back alleys for muggers during his initial outing he instead watches the news, puts on his suit, and just heads to Afghanistan for some good old fashioned payback/clean up work. Can't wait to own this on Blu-Ray!

Just saw it this afternoon and I agree with everything you said 100%. Easily one of my Top 5 favorite superhero/comic book films of all-time and the Blu-Ray should be AWESOME!!!

One of the things about the Iron Man character of the comics that I always thought seemed almost *too* far-fetched was him seeing out of those tiny slits in his helmet. I thought it was pretty ingenious how the movie gave him a HUD allowing full peripheral vision. A pretty simple concept when you think about it but I never got the impression he had such a display in the comics. Plus it allowed RDJ's face to be shown in combat without having to give him a reason to take his mask off every other second (which I hate when movies do.)

The Afghanistan scene was almost the epitome of superhero wish fulfillment in this day and age. Kind of like seeing Captain America punching out Hitler one the cover of Captain America Comics #1.

And I love when popcorn movies have multiple layers. You've got the superhero action, the redemption of a very flawed human being, and yet there's even slight Biblical parallels with post-Afghanistan Tony being God (virtually unlimited knowledge, resources, and power within the context of the story), Obadiah being Lucifer (second in command but doesn't like how the 'Boss' is running things, tries to kill his Boss and run things himself), and Rhodes being Adam (Tony gave him the first opportunity to be a savior of sorts but Rhodes blew it when he couldn't see past his own selfishness, therefore with no worthy prospects Tony had take the job himself.) Very nice even if it wasn't intentional.

I have always liked Batman a lot for this reason too, but I think I am only 1 of about 2 people in the world who didn't like Batman Begins very much. I only saw BB once and never had a desire to see it again. It started out pretty excellent, but about 2/3 of the the way through it I had totally tuned out. Hated the last battle scene...

In my opinion, superhero stories should have some fun and humor and light-heartedness in them to balance out the darkness and seriousness (similar to life, in fact - without humor and laughing at ourselves, we would NEVER survive), and I think The Dark Knight will be too.... dark, if you will... for the general audience - although Miller fans will no doubt love it to death... Especially dark with the tragedy surrounding Heath Ledger fresh on peoples' minds.

(Please don't kill me, but I think Batman Begins... takes itself a little TOO seriously, whereas the 'first' had that excellent combo of serious and silly that makes them almost perfect... IMO of course, and coming from a big Burton fan.)

Iron Man is as perfect of a superhero movie as I've ever seen.

Saw It Today..best Marvel Movie Ever.... !!!! .it Even Beats Batman Begins Wich Was A Good Movie But The Last 1/3 Sucked....iron Man Is Awesome From Start To Finish...will See It Again This Week-end.

Interesting posts. I stated something very similar on another forum a couple of days ago. This was is response to a few people (translation: Bat-Fanatics) who seemed to take great offense toward some people who considered Iron Man better than Batman Begins.

Here's what I had to say re: Batman Begins.

Let me preface this by saying that I saw Batman Begins once in the theatre. I have yet to see it on DVD. I plan on watching it again quite soon.

The serious tone was quite refreshing after the latter two Batman films (B Forever and B & R).

The film was excellent up until the burning of Wayne Manor. After that, it kind of fell apart for me. The plot by Ras al Ghul was quite silly, and the Scarecrow and Arkham stuff was way over the top.

I wholly abhorred the actor who portrayed Scarecrow.

Christian Bale was pretty good as both Bruce Wayne and Batman. He seems a bit too scrawny/whimpy for me to really buy him as Batman, but I can pretty much overlook that. And, I may be misremembering his physique. In any event, that doesn't really get in the way of my enjoyment of the film.

I think that Batman Begins is a bit overrated by many Bat-fans. This is not directed at anyone in particular, mind you, but I see Bat-fans raving about this being the greatest comic book movie "ever" all the time. Almost like they have to convince themselves, or else they're trying too hard to prove that it's the best.

It's too bad that the last 3rd or 4th of the film fell apart for me; otherwise, it would probably be up there in my top 5 superhero films.

The Dark Knight looks quite promising.

I've said for the past 15 years or so that there are two superhero films that need to be made: Marvel needs to do an Iron Man film, and DC needs to do a Green Lantern movie. Iron Man should be done due to the technology aspect of the character, and GL would thrill filmgoers due to the incredible visuals that the Power Ring would create. A GL film would be a star-spanning cosmic thrill ride that would really rock.

Iron Man rocked.

Now let's see Green Lantern on film.

I would love to see a Green Lantern film but I'm worried that they'd make it too campy...and not really put thought into how to make it great. Every GL script that has been leaked has always taken a comic routine....unfortunately.

That being said: IRON MAN IS THE BEST COMIC BOOK MOVIE EVER.

High five! I will be watching Batman Begins for the second time before going to see the Dark Knight. Green Lantern would rock!

That's too bad about the GL scripts. I can see how it would make sense to inject humor into the story at first; who wouldn't do some crazy things with the ring when learning how to use it? Can you say ring constructs of several Victoria's Secret models waiting on you hand and foot and... but I digress, sorry. ;) But to make the whole thing into a comedy would be terrible.

Anyway, here's to more top-quality superhero movies like Iron Man!

Oh, if the Thor movie is only 1/2 as good...

I agree, there an opening for humor just like there was in Iron Man but let's put it this way. The last scribe that handled a GL script wanted someone like Jack Black to play the main role. :(

It looks like though they are moving away from Hal to a John Stewart version so I'm still not happy about that but at least it'll be more serious.

I knew this would be a sleeper hit!!!!!(once i saw the first teaser)

Can't wait for the blu-ray

I find that this movie is being incredibly overrated. It was incredibly predictable and formulaic and the final fight scene was dreadful. I like the movie overall, but I don't think it deserves to have it be called "Best comic movie" or anything close to that range. I'd call it a good Marvel film and a step in the right direction. I just don't understand why they're so afraid to go against the grain (yes, like in BB).

I'm going too stand by my thought of it being the best Comic book adaption 'period', but yes you are right the final fight in the film was very mediocre

I'm sorry I thought BB was OK not the best Batman flick but OK.The Dark Knight looks really good on the other hand.:D

I thought that Iron Man was a near perfect film...up until the final battle. It stood out in stark contrast (no pun intended) to the rest of the film.

How the hell does Batman Begins go against the grain? It's as formulaic as every other comic book movie. Hero gets wronged, puts on a suit and catches the bad guy will sacrificing his love life so he can devote himself to justice. They're all like that.

I never had any interest in IM the comic character but after the movie I need to track down some trades and I can not wait till the sequels roll out.

My brother has been driving me and the rest of my family crazy lately. He wants to get these sunglasses but can't find out what they are called. Anybody here know?

I agree....

No Tony Stark/IronMan hard-on for me.

The funny thing is that Iron Man is Marvel's Batman. At its base and core, its a man who wants to fight for humanity, based in personal reasoning using their wealth and mind to create powers for a powerless being.

That's where it stops though, Batman has always had the duality, Bruce Wayne does not want to be Bruce Wayne, he wants to be Batman. He uses Bruce as a means to an end and to continue his fight going on but for Bruce, the Bruce Wayne persona is the costuming. For Tony, he's always Tony. In the suit or out of the suit, even when they did the whole "He's my Bodyguard" lines in the comics, he was still acting the same in and out. There isn't a duality in him and that's what I love. Flawed and "normal", Tony Stark keeps the same persona in and out of the armor. I thought the film captured that perfectly and really made it different than Batman as it should be, especially considering that Batman is so hot right now.

The fact that everyone outside of comic book fans didn't make a direct connection to the two architypes show how great each of these films really was. IMHO Iron Man definitely trumps Batman Begins but we'll see how it'll hold up against The Dark Knight.
