Re: Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain
Wow, I'm a bit surprised by all the negativity here after that new trailer.
I understand many of the opinions, and agree with some. I'm a huge MGS fan, it's one of my favorite series of all time (even if I get some continuity/story issues wrong). I prefer Solid Snake over Big Boss in terms of story and such, but playing as Big Boss doesn't hurt the gameplay of the games for me.
I'm more excited for MGSV/Phantom Pain than any other game right now, and I don't think that's because I'm ignorant or unappreciative of the first games in the series. If someone thinks I don't like MGS1, they clearly don't know me well. I think one can like the new games and the old ones. Even if Kojima or whoever messes up the story or continuity, it doesn't affect my appreciation of the original games in the slightest.
I remember people said Kojima ruined the series with Raiden and the plot of MGS2, but I thought it was one of the best games I ever played. People said Kojima hated Snake and was ruining the series with Big Boss when MGS3 came out, but I enjoyed everything about that game, including playing as Big Boss. And even with the controversial choices in story, I'll never forget MGS4 (the return to Shadow Moses will be stuck in my head forever, brought back all my nostalgia for MGS1), and the themes of aging and nearing the end really meant a lot to me.
I think Kojima is still a brilliant game designer, and the gameplay stuff he comes up with is part of the reason I love the series so much, not just the story. I played MGS1, 2 and 3 combined for probably longer than any other game series, just experimenting and having fun with the AI and stuff. And I'm still replaying MGS4.
I can't blame Kojima for leaving Solid Snake out of the series for so long, even if it did frustrate me for many years. I think despite what has been said, Kojima never intended to flesh out his story more than it has been, and MGS4 signaled to me Kojima wanted to move on from Snake. I'm actually fine with that in some ways, because if Kojima really is running out of ideas, I'd prefer he experiment with Big Boss rather than ruin the image of Snake. A part of me suspects that's what Kojima's thinking is as well.
I suppose I'm in it for the gameplay just as much as the stories (I find it difficult to separate the two), and as much as some people hate his stories, I'm greatly amused by the weirdness of it all, along with the moments of greatness that come through.
Not arguing with you guys, and I'll probably never post here again as I don't like arguing back and forth. Just wanted to throw my views out there. Being excited for the new games doesn't mean you're an idiot or not a "true fan" of the series. In my own opinion, just like some of you probably think, I'm the biggest MGS fan in the world.
