I guess I'm gonna have to build my own elbow pads -- I can't find anything online that will work.

Anyone have any leads?

Also, as long as I'm asking about parts, is the zipper on the GB boots unique or are there real boots that have that zipper down the side? Likely gonna have to mod that onto some Newline boots.

The zipper on the boots is screen accurate.
However Ill be using something else as the Mattel version isnt up too present industry "standards.":D

What really makes the pads look bad and out of scale is the arm strap. Take the actual pad portion itself off the strap and glue it on a curved piece of plastic. What Mattel provided is actually the best basis for an accurate pad.

Good idea. I'm looking at the Mattel pad now and the "pad" portion is good enough I suppose. Maybe glue or sew it onto a loop of dark gray stretchy material and it should work just fine.

One less thing to buy. :)

Now all I need are boots and a gray 3-grommet web belt...

yeah affter looking at some screen grabs frm the movie and seeing the zipper down the side of the boot, i may paint or add the silver zipper onto my boots witha thin tip silver art pen. might be better that way then painting it on, be smoother and straighter.

Watching GB on AMC right now and neither of the two sculpts (Vartel & Spenser) look like Ray. They resemble him. All the other GBs custom heads are good. And Dan wasn't as fat as we remember him. Sorry Dan.

Well, likeness is in the eye of the beholder, but I think Vartal's sculpt is pretty great. So are Spencer's, but I think Vartal's tap into Aykroyd's likeness a bit better. I initially thought the forehead was a bit large, and maybe it is, but Aykroyd's got a fairly large forehead:

Vartel gave him an older look. For spenser's the base head looks better, the painted version looks off. Yes, all these comments are subjective but money isn't so before I plunk down some cash I got to be satisfied.

That last pic isn't what I'm looking for. Winston even has that 80's cut.

i duno tho, as isaid i like both, altho spensers is better to me, and more detailed. i jst think vartals reminds me of john goodman more than dan for some reason lol

I think it looks even better from the angle you see on his website:

I just bought one, btw, so hopefully we'll all see how one looks painted up in the not-too-distant future :)

It does look like an older version with the slightly more receding hairline and less poofy hair, but not much older, IMO.

And whichever way we all end up going, one thing is for sure--both of these sculpts blow Matty's way, way out of the water.

I think both sculpts are very impressive, but the one criticism I can say for both is that neither seems as child-like as Akroyd often was during the movies. Neither capture a certain restrained giddyness or youthful exuberance that Ray often had.

Yeah, that's the one thing I actually like about the Matty sculpt--the joyful smile is a very appropriate facial expression. Now if only the execution didn't suck.

I'm doing resin cast of the screen accurate elbow pads if anyone wants. Ill try to get some pictures up soon. Also, can someone tell me if the patches are sewn on or silk screened? Last, anyone got a close up of the belt gizmo yet? Mine should come in soon but but Id like to see it so I can start planing haha. I may part with my custom Ray on ebay and just start a new with this. though I loved my Ray :'(

JRSly, that's it!

Kara, I'm not saying it doesn't look like Dan; it does. It doesn't look like him in 1984. It also reminds me of him in the Coneheads. Oddly enough he was younger in Coneheads. Get that head and post some pics, 'cause he's the only one that's keeping me from pulling the trigger on either set.

well we all agree bud that both rays are good, it jst comes down to personal choice of the two. plus u need a ray, hes the heart of the gb remember!!

Get the sculpt you like. No need to discuss artist's work or who's better. We're lucky to have a plethora of options.

Astro_zombie: love to see what you come up with.

No disrespect to anyone's work. However, art is out there to be discussed. We discuss HT, SS, Mattel, etc. sculpts. There isn't a difference. And don't go the route of those guys are professionals. Some of the people that put their art up here get paid and that makes them professionals.
Please don't take what I say as something aggressive. I like discussion when it stays civil; and it has.

I have one very VERY poor photo of the pad sculpt here

https://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a337/_astro_zombie_/100_3877.jpg

I used my set of real ones as the reference. Its textured to look like felt-cloth and has the stitches sculpted in. I made cast of them in resin, hollowed out the backs, painted them, and now I'm in the process of making the cloth bands. If I do a run of them it will probably be like 5 or 10 bucks for a set of 4 (for all 4 GBs that is). I may also do a run of belt gizmos where I use small clear glass beads and thread for the nixies, aswell as having screen accurate circuit boards. If there is enough interest Ill keep you guys updated here.

And I guess if I REALLY get alot of interest Ill just do a whole kit with proper Motrola radios, key rings, gizmo, and pads. I know the GBs gear like the back of my hand thanks to 2 years worth of work on my Ray figure and 1:1 scale pack and gear :chew
