I wonder if HT will tackle Maul?

I'd imagine some day, but honestly, if Sideshow can ship a figure looking just like what we've seen, there isn't much room for HT to raise the bar, unless Sideshow doesn't do a second portrait or it doesn't turn out so well, I can't recall Sideshow doing any teeth showing sculpts so I suppose it could be a little off if they try. His electronics could have LEDs but that's not really worth the cost upgrading to HT would come with. We haven't seen his robe so that's an area but I have more faith in Sideshow these days, Palpatine's robe was perfection. I could see HT taking on Maul's bike, but Sideshow has done a speeder bike so they might even take it on themselves. I'd say where HT could do Maul and stand out from Sideshow would be clone wars version, their muscle bodies, they could consistently do the body tats well, and their Iron Man tech shows they could do a really good job with his mechanical lower body.

Don't know if it counts as it's not humanoid but Bossk has teeth in both sculpts. Both are pretty solid too. And I'm totally in agreement about having Maul in some way sticking around in place of Dooku. Awesome villain like Boba, shrouded in mystery, but wasted. Could have spanned the first two movies. Would have meant more too when Anakin took him down, being that he killed Qui-Gon, etc.

How much did this sell for? This is horrendous. Looks like a WalMart toy.

He was made in 2006 for around $50, it was a good figure at the time. Don't compare him to a figure next year that will cost $200 more than he did. My guess is you looked better 9 years ago than you do today.....I know I did. :lol

and the one who's a threat with his words and actions, Maul was the swift sword. I wonder if Lucas could have sensed the popularity Maul would find, would he have altered the course of the prequels.

I feel like you could easily take Dooku out and find some other way for the results of his presence to happen. All we ever really see him do is try to sway some separatists to his side, most of his accomplishments are through exposition. Imagine Anakin's downward turn if he had to kill Maul instead of old man in Episode 3.

Um... he got killed by a padawan, albeit a gifted one. If Anakin had killed him he would have felt no remorse and it would have put him less on the path to the Dark Side than killing a once Master Jedi who had in fact trained Qui Gonn - the man that freed him from slavery. Dooku was not given enough screen time but Christopher Lee is amazing and Dooku was really great.

I mean he incapacitated Obi Wan, cut off Anakin's arm and fought his way out of a confrontation with Yoda but somehow that is more than Maul? Maul just looked cool and was a place holder for Palpatine until he could get what he really wanted - Anakin.

That being said I love Maul.. but Dooku > Maul x1000

Maul was one dumbfoundingly, childish mistake away from changing the course of Star Wars forever. lol

Qui Gonn and Obi Wan are also some of the greatest jedi, so I don't think Maul wasn't incredible himself. Maul was a very gifted warrior. And in the book, Sidious had complete faith in him taking out the jedi. Even after his death, he chalked it up to just a bad blunder, an unlucky break. In his perception, Maul would have came out that same fight the victor way moreso than the loser.

But regardless, I thought Christopher Lee seemed half asleep as Dooku. He looked bored and he made me bored. Also, with him being older, I always felt like he was a temporary placeholder for Sidious. I mean, everybody is, true (and knowing that the story is ultimately about Anakin as well), but I agree with MF. I think if Lucas knew the lightning that he had in the bottle he would have worked MAul into the story more. I could be wrong but that I did always think as well.

Now, having said all that--and as a fan of the Clone Wars--I did not care for Maul in the CW at all but I loved Dooku. lol

Maul was a lot like Anakin... arrogant... overconfident... Maul thought he had the upper hand with the "high ground"... he naively toyed with Obi Wan... it wasn't a "blunder", it was an immaturity of tactic.

To be fair, people's comments are warranted by that picture. No matter what perspective you're looking at the pic from, every other figure, including C-3PO in the far back, looks to be in scale with each other and that Maul just looks puny. It's weird how they pick and choose what liberties they choose to take on sometimes.

Black does make one look slimmer... :wink1:

Regardless, I'm keen as I missed out on all the previous issues of Maul. But will wait and see the final production figure. For now, the OT figures are already draining my bank account....

The two biggest issues holding the sculpt back were the paint-job (as mentioned, given the price and date of release, it wasn't bad) and the passive expression (which could have been better even at the time and the price). With a repaint, and some slight modification (sculpted eyebrows and upper eyelids removed) the sculpt can look pretty good:

I like the look of the new Maul, but I'm not sure yet if I want to upgrade. I will definitely get at least the boots, clothing and sculpt remains to be seen. I'm pretty happy with my custom body in terms of proportions, I think it really reflects Ray Park's build, so I'll wait until release to see if I want to buy the whole thing, or just get some parts.

That makes a huge difference. I love the expression. But I need my > $200 to have that out of the box lol

That custom is great, really shows how it doesn't matter how good any one part is, the whole has to be the best of each area to make it all work. I know the sculpt was reworked a bit, but I think even just the same repaint on what was there would have made as much a difference. The big changes needed are making the black areas around his eyes smaller, makes it seem like his eyes and face are more angrily squinted, and then just enhancing the overall look of the eyes to breath life in them.

While nicer overall, Sideshow's paint falls into the same problem as the original Hasbro with the giant black areas around the eyes, if you look at move shots, anytime he was aggressive they were much smaller, Sideshow painted it very passive.

I love the snarl look on SSC new Maul. Might get a couple of pieces off of it. Like a couple of others, I'm satisfied with my custom. The new waist belt looks nice so far. I really think Medi has the best sculpt so far, capturing Park's portrait. Like most Medi heads, they're thrown off by the skinny neck joint they use and the heads always need to be drastically shave up the the jawline to fit new, better necks.
Added skin texture and a translucent layer of paint.

Those of you who have customizing skills have made some very nice Mauls. I think this new Maul has a spot on likeness with slightly longer horns. I think its a perfect look. When I look at the face I see a meaner, more feral Ray Park.
