Re: Hot Toys - MMS - The Phantom Menace - Darth Maul and Sith Speeder

I dreaded it only because of all the time it will take away from the OT and getting a Krennic.

Re: Hot Toys - MMS - The Phantom Menace - Darth Maul and Sith Speeder

I think the reason the HT one looks less like actual Maul than the SSC, is the mouth/chin area... it's narrower than the actor and the SS version.

For the PERS, this is a stretch.... but could it be that the reason the tats are sculpted, is that a portion of the front of the face is removed to access the PERS? The Dark Knight method would be better, but I've seen HT do some odd things when it comes to things like battery compartments and light/sound switches...

As they change doing the movie there aren’t any correct tattoos.

Precisely, I could post probably at least half a dozen variations of Maul’s tattoos from press photos to film stills, there isn’t a universal design to follow, its all manufacturer choice. HT chose a style where the lines from his eyes to his forehead are much thicker, not my favorite, but not inaccurate either.

Re: Hot Toys - MMS - The Phantom Menace - Darth Maul and Sith Speeder

I’ll definitely be getting this and I’ll keep my Sideshow V2 for comparisons and possible part swaps. If they screw up the boots I’ll have the SS ones on hand to swap.

I'd love to see that to be honest if you're willing to post. I just watched TPM last night after getting excited about this fig and looked at a lot of stills to compare.

The SS tats are way, way thinner than anything in the movie. And the nose never has the dog nose shape in the movie.
The HT is a bit thinner, yes - but the tats are much closer to the film than SS.

I'm not sure why you guys are brushing this off for the SS when you're complaining about things like the jaw width on the HT lol.

You could ask yourself that very same question, just the other way round. Why are you brushing the question of the narrow jaw, likeness or the tattoo lines off for the HT when you’re complaining about things like the width of the tattoos?
...if you didn’t have that lol in the end, maybe you would get an answer to your question.

The tats might be the right size, but in the film they don’t look like they’re engraved into his head, but look smooth as tattoos should look. Not sure why you’re brushing that off either.

It’s a give and take scenario, as many have noted.

Because I'm talking specifically about the tattoos, and was responding to a comment specifically about the tattoos.
For me, the jaw width looking less like Ray Park isn't anywhere near as big of an issue. Maul has a skinnier face in TCW and Rebels, yet his tattoos are pretty consistent (especially the nose which is easily the biggest offender).
If the biggest issue with a sculpt is the width of a jaw, then I'd say it's pretty good. Almost every other SW sculpt has something that's not good about it.
The engraved lines don't really bug me personally. In person it looks fine, and you'll be able to light it so it's not noticeable.

The tattoos on the other hand, would need to be repainted. You could show both of these heads and a pic of Maul from the movies to someone unfamiliar and go "spot the difference", and it wouldn't be difficult at all to point out how the tats on the SS are wrong.

Again, I was responding specifically to a comment about the tattoos. A comment which said they could find numerous examples in the movie where the tattoos are inconsistent and similar to the SS. Which is false, and people are literally making up excuses as to how the shapes of the SS tats are "also accurate". Context is important.

And at no point did I ever say the engraved thing wasn't an issue. It's not personally an issue to me, as noted above, but I didn't even mention that. So don't try to put words in my mouth saying I brushed it off. I would prefer they didn't have engraved lines, but they're a far smaller issue than the paint apps on the tattoos being completely wrong, which some people are trying to say are totally accurate because it's like that in some scenes in the movie (it's not).

Re: Hot Toys - MMS - The Phantom Menace - Darth Maul and Sith Speeder

Engraved tattoos to have them look right from a foot away on display isn't an issue, might even be a prototype only thing. Sideshow v2 is an amazing fig but my personal opinion at the moment is to wait for the HT one... if it has the cloak, not really that interested in the scooter

Re: Hot Toys - MMS - The Phantom Menace - Darth Maul and Sith Speeder

I love this thread.
I love this figure.

Re: Hot Toys - MMS - The Phantom Menace - Darth Maul and Sith Speeder

Hot Toys Maul is sheer evil and brutal..wait until promo pics with the cloak > instant win

SS version is boring, i used my buget to get SS Tie + AT-AT driver instead of Maul last year because I knew Hot Toys Maul is inevitable

Re: Hot Toys - MMS - The Phantom Menace - Darth Maul and Sith Speeder

I love reading all of the rationalization about SS vs HT Maul. Personally, I’d be listing my SS on eBay as we speak. “Move over bare bones- now there’s something DX meaty!”

Re: Hot Toys - MMS - The Phantom Menace - Darth Maul and Sith Speeder

Highly likely that Maul is the first PO once the show is over.

It's going to be interesting to see if they offer a "figure only" version or if he is only being offered with the Speeder. I"m hoping for just the figure. The Speeder isn't doing it for me - I think Sideshow would've done a better job here - their Speeder Bike is excellent.

I'm not as into this figure as I thought I would be - he's sooner than expected from HT and I would would loved to see him teased with Qui-Gon from HT.
As hesitant as I am, I know I'd better jump when he goes on PO - I'm sure he'll SO pretty quickly.

Oh, and if I do go for this one, it doesn't mean the earlier version will be jettisoned from the collection - I still have the Hasbro one and both SSC versions. It's cool to see the evolution and different approaches to this character over the years. There's something good about each version - HT just adds to it.

You asked, differences all over the place, particularly the thickness and pattern of the lines connecting his eyes to the spade shapes on his forehead, the "tongue" coming down from his mouth varies in shape and size, the black around his eyes varies, just a lot of inconsistency and room for interpretation as to what you think Maul should look like. Same with what horns were where and when.

Re: Hot Toys - MMS - The Phantom Menace - Darth Maul and Sith Speeder

Yeah, anyone complaining about the tats on either figure has no leg to stand on. I do agree, the subtle shade of red tint in the black on the Hot Toys is better. Sculpt still needs work though. Also, Maul has a dog nose. I don’t know why someone would even dispute that. :lol

The Hot Toys needs to remove the pleats from the shirt and work on the sculpt a bit. If they did that, the figure would be just about as perfect as you’re gonna get. Oh and the ankles. They have to find a way to get articulation there.

Re: Hot Toys - MMS - The Phantom Menace - Darth Maul and Sith Speeder

I'm curious to see HT Maul in a more relaxed, standing pose, does their costume have that baggy, heavy look to it like Park's costume had, it's one thing no company has managed to day, the costumes always feel like idealized versions of the outfit but lack that defining trait.
