So the $276 million from overseas doesn't count?

It counts towards the overall gross but American movie studios care about domestic gross/performance first and foremost. And again, that "$276 million" is gross. The studio doesn't reap 100% of that in as profit.

Prometheus was a domestic box office dud.

Correct. American film studios are *very* patriotic. A profit of hundreds of millions of dollars only means something if it was Americans who were paying to see the movie.

:lol

even if the studios only recieve 50% of foreing gross, it´s still a lot of money to break even, and were not even counting the dvd/blu ray sales , in which prometheus also did very well

First off, I'd be SURPRISED if Prometheus actually netted 100 million dollars. :lol:lol:lol

And second, you know what I mean Khev. It's like saying if a TV show gets canceled because of low ratings but when it goes into reruns or is picked up on another channel and does well that it WAS NOT a failure i.e. Southland on NBC/TNT. That show bombed on NBC, but TNT has been more than happy with the ratings its gotten on their station. Doesn't change the fact that it originally bombed. Just like Prometheus failing domestically and then being successful overseas. Don't pretend American movie studios don't care about the domestic box office.

Right but given the fact that Prometheus *has* found success with overseas and blu-ray/dvd sales it does change its status as a "failure." The original Austin Powers was a "bomb" with a meager 53 million domestic take. But it was *so* successful on home video that a sequel was greenlit and that home video success translated to Austin Powers 2 making MORE than 53 million dollars...in its opening weekend! And now we sit back and look at the massively successful trilogy as a whole and no one ever mentions the weak performance of the first film, because it didn't translate to not finding an audience and not being considered a success.

I think your joke detector was switched off for that one :wink1:

This >

It was a bad joke, anyway.

No clue where you got that, but it's flat out wrong. Prometheus is actually at 335 for All Time Domestic, 155 for All Time Worldwide and 59 for R Rated movies and 200 for adjusted rates. :slap

It's supposed to get a sequel. Lot's of movies were supposed to get sequels and never did. We'll see.

It failed domestically, that's a fact. Not opinion.

The budget was $130 million (which doesn't include marketing/promotion) and it only made $126,477,084 here. And that's gross i.e. Fox did NOT get 100% of that.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

No, 20th Century Fox CONFIRMED a sequel with Rapace and Fassbender already onboard. Also it was the number 10 best opening for a rated-r film, not the biggest earnings, but still. so:nana:

Wasn't there supposed to be those black goo canisters at the bottom of that mini bust? I think I've seen a pic of that somewhere? Hmm.. Looks cool regardless. ;)

No, actually it wasn't. You do realize that first Austin Powers movie only cost $16.5 million to make, right? So that $53 million domestic take actually equaled over 3x its budget. How much did Prometheus make over its budget domestically? Oh right..

Bad example.

Until it actually goes into pre-production, that sequel is tentative i.e. not for sure. It doesn't even have a rough draft for the script. Like I said, we'll see. Just have to wait. Terminator Salvation had a confirmed sequel with Christian Bale signed on and then all that fell apart behind the scenes. It happens.

Who cares!?

Here's another fabricated accomplishment for Prometheus to help you avoid the fact that it was a domestic dud: It's the highest grossing movie of all time featuring Michael Fassbender as an android called "David". Happy? :lol:lol:lol

You keep referring to the film's domestic earnings, but it did even better overseas. Studios dont care where the money is coming from as long as they are making a profit.

You'd think that.. but no. A lot of movies have bombed domestically, done well overseas and have been considered duds. That's just how it works.

Oh, right. Now a movie's success isn't measured in American ticket sales only but *how many times its budget is multiplied.* :lol

I guess we can all stop talking about Avatar and Titanic (and certainly Prometheus) since according to Devil_666 "El Mariachi" is what Hollywood considers to be the most successful film of all time. I'm sure countless studio executives were set for life off of it's 2 million dollar profit. :duh ;)

Who cares really? Either you like the movie or you don't but it looks like a sequel is in the future. Pages of back and forth over domestic and overseas earnings are getting really old and i'm sick of it. Would like to just discuss the movie and possibilities of the next chapter - good or bad but can we just move on?
