So it's not just me, right? I mean how does a laughing smile face completely change the meaning of what he typed?
I'm not sure what the "official rules" for conveying emotion through digital communication are, but I was under the impression that "lol" or a laughing emoticon simply conveyed humor. Not by default mean that whatever you just said was moot.
Obviously all CAPS generally indicate shouting or yelling, that I can glean also.
Personally, if I said something in jest and I wasn't certain the person would know that I was merely jesting, I would actually say that I was and then follow that up with a "".
