Posted these comps over the past two weeks. I agree with Dave. Obviously different lenses in the pics etc. but I think it's closer than people seem to think. What's off is hard to pin down.

The pic on top left is not ANH Darth Vader.

Yeah that pic is (I think) a promo shot from TESB.

I'll quote the pic again ;) just to beat a dead horse. here is a perfect example of how the black paint on the underside of the eye sockets makes a HUGE difference. That is throwing of the HT likeness a lot.

I just noticed the mouth grill is different. And the chin grill sizes vary a lot. I love this game!

Choosing the right black is also important. They need to find a black that resembles the Rolls Royce Black called Mason's Black. It's a rich, deep black that doesn't have that blue hue that many other blacks has.

But yes, painting the lower and upper eye socket black would work wonders too, and they need to remember that the front facing eyebrow surface should be black too on the ANH, unlike ESB where it is gunmetal and visible under the dome. The inner eye socket surface in towards the nose bridge should be grey, but that is a minor detail where it won't really matter which it was painted with. If they are able to do the gunmetal weathering on the black surfaces of the face mask and chest armor and bells as well, then they should make sure that all surfaces, except for the one just below the eye should be lightly weathered - the upper cheek surface under the left eye (right when looking at it from the front) where the nail mark is, should be the only black surface on these parts that shouldn't get any drybrushed gunmetal highlighting. Of course... that's probably not likely to be done on a licensed figure, though they did attempt some drybrushing on that display piece in the video show off.

You've illustrated it nicely there too - there were obviously different helmets used in the filming of ANH. The under chin grill changed size, the tusks were silver AND black, etc.

With my comparison I also feel that the likeness is lost even though I did a layover of both images and the proportions are pretty much all correct (aside from nose and eyes). Someone it's JUST missed the mark.

That top left one is from Empire Strikes Back, not the '77 Vader.

That's because the real shot isn't ANH.

The chin vent is correct for ANH, and the mouth mesh look fine for ANH as well. That other helmet is a real ESB one.

Yeah, sorry guys - I made it clear when I first posted these pics a couple of weeks ago, but the black and white pic is from ESB banquet scene (couldn't find an ANH pic that matched the angle.)

However, the only differences between ANH and ESB helmets are fairly minor - the below-chin triangle being much larger in ESB, no widow's peak on ESB dome, overall shinier finish on ESB and broken ANH tusk however (lens color too, but it's a B&W pic.) The gun metal paint scheme has a negligble difference.

Overall, the two masks and domes are identical, so can be used for comparison.

One issue to keep in mind is that Darklord Dave used the ESB teaser Vader promo pic for side-by-side comparison, which is valid as it's actually an ANH helmet, but LFL flipped the image. Vader's helmet is not symetrical (quite drastically in some ways) so that pic does distort the look of the helmet somewhat, so is probably not the best pic to use for comps, though it does illustrate HT's too-symetrical sculpt.

Nobody reads.

And the bottom grill is correct on the HT -- it's small and doesn't change sizes in ANH. Lucas made it bigger in ESB, like he showed the "eyebrows" and snipped the widow's peak, to "soften" Vader.... since he's going to be a Daddy. He didn't count on the masses not believing Vader for 3 years. :lol

Hot Toys should up their game with Vader. These little differences are what counts...and clearly driving most of us round the bend:cuckoo:

Man the complaining is getting old. To me its do you want reality or intent. The reality is the ”real” helmet is messed up… it looks crappy and its all over the place. The intent was for it to be what HT and Sideshow are giving us. Do you really think that Vader and the Emperor would settle for the “real” helmet? Vader would look at the fool who made it and force choke him to death. Obviously everyone wants what they want so the complaining will never stop but it just seems pointless to me. And the people calling things garbage and a disgrace and comparing Chewy to a hairball really need to tone it down a bit. They may not be perfect in your eyes but they are nowhere near garbage or a disgrace. Maybe I am just too old for this crap anymore. Get off my lawn you idiot kids. :)

With the exception of Vader, I'm buying all this HT crap. :)

I'll have:

Crap Solo
Crapbacca
Craptrooper
Crapi-Wan Crapnobi

I'll get Crapwalker too... and like it.

The only one that comes close to being outright "crap" to me is Obi-Wan.

Vader, Han, and even Chewie are still pretty damn impressive figures for what they are (even if the details or likenesses aren't as dead-on as I'd like them to be).

I was trolling the trolls with that hairball Chewie comparison. I posted that about the same time as I posted my lump-of-clay Obi Wan.

I figured if people are going to complain, might as well go all out :lol
