Re: Hot Toys Darth Vader Sixth Scale Figure

That body suit looks like complete ****.

So does the Hot Toys one.

I'm not stirring the pot either. Sideshow and Hot Toys just look okay in my eyes. At this point in time, I think it's possible for a 1/6 Vader to look better than what we've been getting for the past couple of years. If I get my tin foil hat out, part of me thinks it's intentional so these companies can keep pumping out more of them. Without the conspiracy cap, I'm thinking maybe they just don't give a crap. Let's face it, it's Vader, it'll sell regardless. The recent 6" Black Series Darth Vader looks like crap, and yet it sells out everywhere. Go figure. I'm sure we'll all be having this debate a few years from now when another 1:6 Darth comes along.

It seems to me if you want any of these Vader figures to look good, you have to do things yourself. The best Vader figures I've seen around here are NEVER stock. They're expertly modded and customized and they actually look like he stepped out of the Death Star, out of the screen, and into real life.

The SSC ANH suit is great.

The Hot Toys suit is decent.

The SSC ESB suit is bad.

Never a better time to be a customizer I guess.

I was really expecting better from HT since they had the benefit of seeing everything that has been done wrong by Sideshow and Medicom.

Sure, the figure overall looks good, but it's still not right.

Re: Hot Toys Darth Vader Sixth Scale Figure

To me it feels more like HT just isn't nearly as devoted to or emotionally invested in their SW license as in their other licenses like Marvel. Which is really obvious in the lack of quality in SW headsculpts across the board.

Which is a shame, because they clearly have the people who could produce great, fantastic SW likenesses (and more accurate Vader costumes) if they were just given the chance.

Either that or they're just producing SO many figures right now that their usual quality control can't help but suffer as a result.

Re: Hot Toys Darth Vader Sixth Scale Figure

Even if it's quantity > quality, Hot Toys' output has been impressive. Sure, other than maybe Fett and the Stormtrooper they're not "all they can be", but few Star Wars figures are. There's a reason these characters have been getting figures for nearly 40 years. If they made a perfect one, there wouldn't be another Luke or Vader down the pipeline for the future. Hot Toys monthly output for these figures may seem like insanity, but there's a method behind their madness. Look how fast they got a variant Trooper out there (hell, it came out before the regular whites!), only a matter of time before we see another Vader which will be just different enough to make people mad.

I think the best option when it comes to Star Wars collecting is an amalgamation of different companies. A helmet here, a suit there, a mask over here, etc. Hasbro has pulled the same thing with their figures for 20 years. Very rarely did they give you a "definitive" one out of the gate. Atleast with 1/6 most things can be modded to be compatible.

I think hot toys the company is like the whopper computer in war games. The only winner doesn't play the game lol

Re: Hot Toys Darth Vader Sixth Scale Figure

Wonder why SSC went with a new sculpt for the DX - that ANH facemask sculpt was good. The dome was the big problem with the ANH (well, and cape and height,) but people got a great look with modding that ANH helmet using the Hasbro dome.

Re: Hot Toys Darth Vader Sixth Scale Figure

I thought this pic was exceptional.

It does look better there than what was released though, mostly because of the high contrast lighting and light is catching the inner part of the mouth grill, making it look smaller than what it actually is. The reddish lens is barely noticeable on the released fig.

High contrast lighting also really helps Vader figs no matter what and this set of SSC ANH pics has the "just right" light combo. To be fair, HT Vader has yet to be seen in a flattering light set-up.

Re: Hot Toys Darth Vader Sixth Scale Figure

I'm not making a case for better or worse. I like Hot Toys' Vader.

Oh, neither am I. I just want a really good Vader - and don't have any.:lol

I just find he's a fig that is really tough to evaluate - complex angles, lighting dependent, relative size of mask to dome. I mean as far as I know, the only company that's come very close on the dome is Hasbro. Which is weird.

Re: Hot Toys Darth Vader Sixth Scale Figure

Oh one more thing....
A very subtle detail that is uniquely characteristic of 1977 vader.
For anh vader, in addition to the interior of his eyelids being black,

the outer forward facing arcing edges of his eyelids are also black, giving him an empty cold stare combined with that lowered dome....

as opposed to being gunmetal w/ the rest of his cranium ( beneath the dome) like the empire version, which gives him that wide eyed look.

That it is. I just remember being extremely happy with that first Vader after SDCC 2008, but then we got one that only looked good from the side. Looking at HT's head on, a lot of the angles give me the feeling that first Sideshow one did, but it's still having issues from the front, and a lot of other details aren't squaring either.

However...I don't exactly care. :dance
