Re: Hot Toys Darth Vader Sixth Scale Figure

Absolutely. But... makes me feel better that I at least did my best to persuade them into doing the right thing. That's all win for me. Whether they actually listen or implement those fixes doesn't really bother me much. :)

Re: Hot Toys Darth Vader Sixth Scale Figure

New pics of hot toys Vader, they actually responded to the complaints, and made some changes.

What figure is that? Dont really know why but I kind of like that look.

You can only but try! :)

Nose is silver.

And you can see silver brush marks on the bridge of the nose. The artist failed their paint by numbers and coloured over the line into the edge of the eyebrow. I think Sideshow employs the same painters.

I always get humor out of when people nit pick screen accuracies, etc. I remember a time where I was just happy to get a figure of a character regardless of what it looked like... how times have changed haha. I look forward to seeing the actual reveal / preorder of this one!

I also remember there was a time when visual references were limited and everyone was just happy to get a vague representation of a character, but those days, at least for Star Wars, are mostly in the past for long time or hard core collectors. As for me, I am very Specifically a vader collector and as much as I like the differences in my vader collection, there are specific collector brands I expect a near faithful sculpt....sideshow, hot toys, eFx, anything more than $100....should exhibit a quality and care in production, the more expensive, the higher the expectation.

Re: Hot Toys Darth Vader Sixth Scale Figure

I know some people are looking for accuracy down to the smallest detail, but I think the majority just want certain details right to get the overally right look. Vader is a character and image that's been everywhere imaginable for the past 30 years, there's a certain presence people associate with his look and I agree with those who feel like these 1/6 companies aren't quite capturing that presence through some of the details, especailly the helmet and mask. The Sideshow ANH Vader helmet reminded me more of my old Don Post costume helmet, sure it looked like Vader in general enough to not argue it looked like a stromtrooper or something, but it didn't have the right image.

This early in the process, the nitpicking is good, IMO. Although it's not guaranteeed, there's a chance that HT will agree w/some of the criticisms and make tweaks. It's really only once a product's been released and everyone's had their say that people reiterating the same points grates on me a bit. I like what I've seen so far, but hopefully HT has set the bar very high for themselves in regards to how these figures look in production.

Re: Hot Toys Darth Vader Sixth Scale Figure

I really wish they could capture that rough look to the ANH mask and chest armor. I know its hard at 1/6th scale but it would really help differentiate this figure from the inevitable ESB Vader who's more clean and regal.

I could see LFL saying they can't, I'm sure Lucas himself would say it was always meant to look like it did in ESB they just didn't have money.

Me too-- let's see if they can at least get the shape and color within the prescribed lines first.....

Re: Hot Toys Darth Vader Sixth Scale Figure

Th ANH screen used suit was so crude that you can see the paint strokes on it. I was amazed when I saw it in person. A true testament to cinema magic.

Which is why it sucks that Lucas has so much self-loathing towards ANH. He would say he's a perfectionist but Star Wars is perfect story-wise, acting wise, dialogue wise, art direction and of course direction; it's perfect in every way that matters. No one gives a **** about the odd shaky matte line or crude outfit. It's why I prefer Star Wars to Empire - sure Empire is excellent, but Star Wars is perfect (well the original version - inserting Jabba upset the structure of the movie).

You saw the original screen used ANH costume? Must have been awesome. When was this and were you lucky to get any pictures of it?

It was a touring Star Wars exhibit. In it they had the screen used suit. It has so many incredible items! It had costumes for Chewie, han, 3po, r2, etc. they also had one of the falcon models and Luke's land soeeder. It was incredible to see!

I did take pics but they were lost long ago, also it was hard to get through the glass. The suit was awesome though you could see the brush strokes, especially on the chest piece. It was so low budget, I was enamoured by that. The switches look real on screen but seriously I would swear it was a block of wood lol. It was also pretty beaten up.

Well there's nothing stopping anybody from slathering on some black paint with a brush themselves. It would probably achieve the same basic effect. You'd just have to sand the helmet down first or spray it with some dullcoat so the paint would have something to grab onto.

That alone makes Star Wars (original) so special. To get all those sets and costumes and special effects; the sheer volume of imagination, every shot with something amazing in it. That film is a miracle in so many ways. Especially for 9.5 million dollars.

I think Lucas forgot about that along the way. I hope he remembers one day. For his own sake.
