Re: Hot Toys Darth Vader Sixth Scale Figure

I think you should have kept that one... sure the robes are hiding the oversized gloves and boots; but damn does that look like Vader :lecture

Thanks man, but he went to a more Vader focused collector who was more stoked to have him than I was, so it's all good. :)

I really enjoyed the figure but I like to keep my collection super-lean.

That said, I'm interested in seeing what a HT Empire version will look like.

And as Jack Bauer confirmed...that HT mask sculpt is the best to date, and I totally agree about the poses.

What's selling mine is the looming, static menace. Vader is not a ninja.

Re: Hot Toys Darth Vader Sixth Scale Figure

Yeah, you really nailed it with the pose and placement of the the robes and cape.

Re: Hot Toys Darth Vader Sixth Scale Figure

Well...there he is. I said before the pics showed up. He is the best representation of Vader so far in 1/6. But I also DID say he was not perfect. You were warned. Being a Vader guy I can list you half a dozen things I find wrong with HTs Vader, but I can list you twice as many things things wrong with Sideshows attempts. So it is a vast improvement. But I think the main problem with the pics released from the show vs. the ones I have seen.. is the pose. People always like to pose Vader in action poses with a lit saber. Vader was static and stoic 99% of the time. Even in Empire he mostly fought Luke with 1 hand. He is not an action character. The dome and facemask are miles ahead of anything Sideshow has done so far. Problem is the dome is sitting too high, like every other Vader out there. On ANH especially the widows peak should go far enough down the bridge of the nose to cover the top slot on the bridge, it should not be visible. Do that and pose him in a static no lit saber pose and you will see he is not perfect...but damn close.

EDIT: I will clarify that before someone else brings it up. When I talk about the proper dome placement for ANH Vader I am speaking of the 1st Tantive IV scenes and the majority of others how it was intended to be...however Vaders dome is a mess in ANH, it is all over the place. Especially when he is flying his TIE. So yeah a high place dome could technically been screen accurate, but not the intended representation.

Thanks for chiming in! :duff

Yep his presence is what sells him...

Yep. I have mine in a more hunched, aggressive pose -- like when he's threatening the Princess. Hopefully the official pics will have some poses like that.

Still though, did they use the old ANH robes from SS? Not happy with that and not what the teaser photo promised. And the gloves are a disappointment too. The rest is not a substantial improvement -- except the helmet. I do like that and will likely get the head and just pop it on my already upgraded SS ANH Vader.

So far I see no reason to pick this one up for $250. I hope I do though.

Re: Hot Toys Darth Vader Sixth Scale Figure

Pretty sure I'm the only one that feels this way, but I really dislike Hurricane's. To my eye, it looks too cobbled together from different molds and the chest box is atrociously sloppy. I don't get the love for that figure at all. I'd take HT's every day of the week over Hurricane's.

If we were talking about their first ones I'd agree with you. But this, to me, is ANH Vader.

Here is their ESB.

The only thing I'd change on that one is the chest box, but overall looks a helluva lot more like the screen Vader than this here HT figure.

Yeah. You should have kept that puppy. Is that the stock dome just lowered? What body did you use, or did you just modify the existing one?

Minimalism rules my life. ;)

Umm...that one was very simple. Hasbro dome, ground out and set on just masking tape to leave it fully adjustable.

Custom robes/cape, no body swap.

Re: Hot Toys Darth Vader Sixth Scale Figure

vader looks amazing, not sure why all the hate. will say it looks more like ROTJ to me than ANH but still looks better than SS.

:exactly:

This could be SSC ANH Vader 2.0...:monkey3

The fig will be converted to ROTJ version w/the robes under the chest armor like some of us did w/the SSC ANH version a few years ago..:wink1:

Re: Hot Toys Darth Vader Sixth Scale Figure

Yup, from the recent pictures emerging, many of the custom Vader's posted here are superior to Hot Toys. I am going to tackle the dome lowering mod soon on my SS IV.

Re: Hot Toys Darth Vader Sixth Scale Figure

It's funny that the robes and kind of funky looking, Sideshow really seems to have gotten the memo on how to make realistic looking capes... the work on both the v2 Vader and Malgus were great.

Yeah, that's what jumped out at me the most as disappointing. Do I really have to use my ilforigno cape and tunic on this one as well? Come on...

I really dont understand what is up with HT and capes. Seriously, its the easiest thing. :lol

Their tailoring for outfits are amazing and then you get to their capes and its utter crap. I'm not sure if they're doing it on purpose or what but even Sideshow got their **** together and came out with a nice tunic + cape for their Vader. All they have to do is change the material that they're using.

Re: Hot Toys Darth Vader Sixth Scale Figure

They actually said that?

I've read that before via someone speculating, but never implied as something that was actually established.

Several times, from various sources, including Andy B, Dusty, the man without pants, and a few others. they all commented on how LFL wants more "idealized Versions" than film accurate versions.
Is anybody disappointed that the chest and belt don't light up? :monkey3

No light-up feature?

Same candy lightsaber....?

Nope. good riddance to bad rubbish.

LOVE the return of the thinner blades.
Keeping in mind the futzing and pictures aren't great, I think it looks really good. I might be just imagining it, but it seems like someone finally got the eye lenses right. Most cases I've seen, they look too narrow but these have that really wide look I've always liked about Vader. Really glad they reproduced the asymmetrical mask. Definitely a buy.

Ben, on the other hand... Looks very idealized and not so much like Guiness. It's sort of weird but I get the impression that HT is not so concerned with actor likenesses w/Star Wars as they are with other properties. Luke, Han and Ben all represent the character well, but aren't dead ringers for the actor. Wonder if that's LFL/Disney.

Glad to see no light-up sabres. Not sure why fans think HT would bother with something super fiddly and QC ridden as CCFL sabres. It will never happen, so stop hoping for it. :lol

Also happy to see that now we have an HT Vader to compare, it doesn't totally destroy SSC's at all. There is still plenty I like about SSC's, though I'll be selling at some point, since I can't justify having two and don't plan to mod it to correct the height. Bundled with Pixelpiper's sabre and battery mods for the chest/belt lights and stand, though, it is an awesome representation, even with its flaws.

Finally: Take that, lerath!!! Pre-order next week, at the latest!! :bunnydanc

I admit defeat. never so happy to be wrong. some things i LOVE ( THE GLOVES! THE GESTURE HANDS! The Sabers! ) Some things i don't. but all in all, very solid.

to bad they'll be closte to 300$

Re: Hot Toys Darth Vader Sixth Scale Figure

Well, I'n in the underwhelmed camp.
It's a very nice Vader, no doubt, but it's still not at the Marmit level of Vaderness.
A lot of it comes down to futzing, obviously, but in general I'm far from blown away by either of these figures...
The dome looks odd (hopefully it's just the placement), the face/mask looks too small, the gloves look bad, the chest box looks small, the cape and tunic look like they won't drape well at all (despite the lack of futzing on these pics), the thighs looks excessively thick and the lower legs and feet look tiny in comparison (I always felt those boots and shinguards looked huge on screen)... it's just a lot of little things adding up to a figure that doesn't really capture the essence of the character IMHO.
Will wait for more pics before making my mind up.

Ben looks pretty bad, likeness s very off.
